Windshields

Response to Windshield parts are sometimes press-fitted and VERY difficult to disassemble

Tell me about windshields. I own FXA315026M a 31' Express flybridge built between 70 to 72.

I bought it in 2004 and have been restoring it ever since, a little bit at a time.

I had to completely dismantle the windshield and side glass assemblies. The whole units were totally falling apart, and were leaking water everywhere. They are not very difficult to remove, they are extremely difficult.

And don't forget the windshield is holding the flybridge in place.......

I had to support the bridge with adjustable support columns, and then, very carefully unscrew everything apart. But first you have to remove the opening panels....What a job, the wiring for the wipers goes through the center post (which needed rewelding since it was cracked), and then divides port and starboard...

My wife and I took it apart, brought it home, took it all apart, cleaned everything, and rebuilt all the little inside bracing pieces out of 1/4" aluminium bar, redrill and retap, scrapped the original brass screws and bolts, replacing with SS. Yes they are press-fitted, but time loosens evetything.

Now it is reassembled and looks like new. Some pitting had occurred but I used brass wool to polish most everything, and simply waxed over.

Engines were also rebuilt (327Q)

Good luck
