1958 383 Mercury Holley carb info ???

I am building a 4V Holley carb from a 1958 Mercury 383. The Holley carb number is List 1616. Does anyone have any info on this carb such as the correct jet sizes, tips, and upgrades for todays low octaine fuel?

There Were Three 4150 Holleys Used On The 383. On the airhorn usually below the LIST NO should be stamped a CARB ID NO., EDG C, EDG E OR EDG D.
You need this ID No. to properly choose the setting specs for the carb. Does your overhaul kit give you this information? If not, I can scan the info from the 58 MERC Shop Manual for you.

The carb is an 842 EDGE LIST 1616. I don't have a kit for it. Actually I have lots of new Holley parts and I am pieceing it all together. If you could scan that for me I would really appreciate it. I hope I have the right jets in it. With the 52 primaries and 59 secondaries.

I have almost finished this Holley carb (EDGE list 1616) but one thing has bothered me some what. The air bleeds on the primary side. The two inner primary air bleeds are missing, there is just a hole. Is this the way they came from the factory? I've never heard of these falling out and they are both the inner ones which almost makes it seem original. Hmmmmmmmmm?

bores. they used this carb on "high torque" 383's in 58 only.

Not sure how the 1616 bleeds were stock, but on my List 6390 (also a 390cfm Holley like your 1616), the inner (main) bleeds are zero, ie not drilled at all. No bleed, at least at that location. The outer (idle) bleeds are about .067" in the usual brass insert.
Maybe yours were undrilled also, like mine, and somebody drilled them out to lean things out at high speed?
Perhaps somebody knows the spec for the air bleeds on the 1616 to solve this mystery.

The 1616 seems a bit small at 390cfm for a big 383/312hp rated engine but then again it is a heavy car. If you can't get that carb running right you might try a larger carb like a 450cfm or 550cfm Holley or a 4100 Autolite 1.12 or 1.19
