Welcome to the Vintage Wasserpumper Forum. Our main feature at the forum is the MASTER INDEX FILE, which is an organized archive of valuable posts, photos, and data, which is updated from time to time to include new information posted on the forum. If you are on a rural dial-up service, or have an otherwise slow computer setup, please be patient for the main page to load, due to numerous photo thumbnails. I will be working in the future to accelerate the opeining of photos on this web site. Regards to all, Paul.

The front engine water cooled cars not only saved Porsche from extinction by increasing sales, they also out performed the rear engine models in several areas, due to superior weight bias and overall handling. The 924 and 944 series started out as mid-level sports car, and was developed into high powered turbocharged world beater. The 4-cylinder 944 and 968 engine, is basically 1/2 of a 928 V8 engine on a special 4-cylinder block. The 928 evolved into one of the finest high performance luxury GT cars ever produced for the general public. All Porsches are great cars, but early wasserpumpers (1977-1995) don't have that tendency to want to crash backwards when you lift off the throttle while going into a decreasing radius turn (no offense to our rear engine bretheren).

It's not a Porsche.......................It's a lifestyle!

(ABOVE:) The 1983 928S 5-speed, shown here, was the fastest car sold in North America in 1983. These cars are understressed with moderate power, and as a result of the motor design and reasonable stage of tune, the motors have racked up some very impressive longevity. One of my friends had one with 268,000 miles on the odometer and it ran beautifully with little oil consumption. The 928 is also geared very tall, making interstate or autobahn travel at high speeds quite relaxed. The 1983 car shown here is geared for 210 mph at the 6000 rpm redline, but naturally the power and drag won't allow the car to reach that speed. At 70 mph the motor is turning 2000 rpm, so you can see how relaxed this gearing is. They were built for comfort and speed, and the comfort requirement added weight. Even so, the 928 is highly under rated over the road, and capable of great road holding and fun on any road. For some insight into the engine design, including some common features shared with it's 944 siblings, check out the following thread..

Vintage Porsche 4 and 8 cylinder wasserpumpers share a lot of technology, including many motor components in the 944 and 928 series, although the 944 equivalents did have a bit more compression, the heads and other systems are "identical" for all practical purposes. The series also shares the use of high silicon aluminum cylinder bores, a feature that rarely ever needs attention even in very high milage cars. The technology is so similar within this series, if you own and understand one, you'll generally be able to work on the other model too. The V8 series ran from 1977 to 1995 and evolved along a similar path, from a great GT to a world class supercar in every way. The 1983 928S was the fastest car sold in North America, and cost more in 1983 (with options) than a new Corvette sitting on the showroom floor today. Today the Corvette borrows a lot of technology from that initial 1977 Porsche design, including the use of a transaxle, but the Corvette still has not utilized the rear wheel steering or aluminum body panels to achieve the superior weight and balance of the 1977 928. To those of us who have a basic ability to diagnose simple electronic gremlins, do basic repairs, and pay attention to normal maintenance items, the 928 is still one of the best driving supercars available on the road today.
