Reality Check

November 12 2008, 4:19 PM

These boats seem to be valued towards the bottom of even the "Wellar Price Spectrum". There are some criminally good deals popping up for guys with some discretionary income and imagination. Have ya'all been paying attention to the 38' market. We should see some new blood coming into the Forum fold in the future! We are already welcoming some new owners of 35' and 36' models.

yours truly, Chris Wade

The WPS standard of classic boat evaluation

November 12 2008, 8:29 PM

Ohhh brother, Chris, that's so dry, I laughed out loud when I saw the note.

You know it's web sites like this that cause schmucks all over the world to think their boats are rare, collectable, and worth more than the WPS will bear, ha! Will we ever hear the end of this???? Probably not! It might even show up in Wikipedia happy.gif

WELLER PRICE SPECTRUM

November 13 2008, 8:25 AM

Ok I see where this is going and on that note for your review

boat 1 in Glenview IL 23' Lancer with outdrive and 350 GM motor and a trailer looks like a good deal could probably get it for less than the $700 advertised he is moving and wants rid of it. My only issue is getting it from Il to Oh I have a vehicle that will haul it but the trailer scares me and I have no place to work on trailer in IL.

boat 2 Detroit(Fair Haven) $1000 is again not a bad price volvo outdrive is good but a 4 cylinder in a 23 footer seems kinda weak has a trailer much closer to me than Chicago interior will need work but thats half the fun. Again any trailer that has been sitting a long time scares me tires bearings etc... but if you can get bearings close by it is easy enough to replace them and there is always a tire dealer around somewhere to get trailer tires so... still dont like the 4 banger in a 23.

boat 3 New Hampshire location is a deal breaker for me that and no trailer just too far away for me but that said interior is the best of the bunch from photo it has a 350Q no less so I know I can fix anything wrong with that. If I lived in NH I would definitely look at it. Could probably get it for $1000 since he is asking 1200 with "noisy" engine.

Now as far as the Weller Price Spectrum is concerned sorry if you don't like how I buy things but it works for me. Bought my 35' Chris for 17k and haven't put that much in it but I like working on things myself. The only mechanic ever on my boat were 2 the first one told me I had the firing order wrong for a 350 Chevy but he had never seen a Q motor booted him off the boat. The second one helped me diagnose the cam issue with the motor and I would let him on any boat I owned.

We are doing a little research to see if we can figure out the specs. Here are some pics, let me know if it looks familiar.

Cool Hardware

November 12 2008, 7:52 PM

I love how CC used the classic runabout hardware during this era of fiberglass production boats. You can see those clam shell deck vents on mahogany speedboats back into the early 50's. The skier mirror looks pretty cool too!

You say it has a le motor from a le car, huh? Good luck, it will make a nice tender for the new yacht. CW

This some of the more rare hardware you'll find at the boating flea markets, only found on vintage Corsair boats, of which there were not all that many/

Okay, here is the scoop on ORBZ 16 0018 N.

November 12 2008, 9:28 PM

It's a 16' Corsair Sport-V, and it's not a 1968 because there were only 110 of these built, 75 in 1965 and another 35 in 1966

The 1965 model was called the XL160 Sportster, and the 1966 model is the Sport-V.

LOA is 16'
Beam is a pretty stout 7'-9"
Weight is a lightweight 1400 pounds
Fuel capacity is 21 gal
Original hull side color is blue and white
Engine offering Mercury 60 hp and 120 hp.

ORAZ-16-6001 to ORAZ-16-6075 (1965 production run, 75 boats)
ORBZ-16-001 to ORBZ-16-035 (1966 production run, 35 boats)

Your prospect is boat number 18 of the 35 built in 1966. You won't see yourself out on the lake driving this rig! Rare back then, and not telling how few still exist. It's been 42 years since they made one.

Regarding the motor, I'm interested in knowing the story on the two options, what they are based on, etc. The Renault Gordini was raced all over Europe, they made millions of them, and parts are still available. There are some strange marriages out there too, since an Audi 4 cylinder actually appeared in the AMC Gremlin, and it also appeared in the original Porsche 924. Volvo solid lifter pushrod motors were used in lots of boats, they are as durable as tractor motors, got to love the ole B-18. When you find out what it's got, we're interested in knowing the details!

Not sure where this one will shake out on the Weller Price Spectrum, but be advised that standard includes "stealing" the boat, lol.

Rare boat alert!

Paul

Interesting to see this brochure says it's an OMC 120 hp motor. Wonder what it really has. The outdrive on these models would be something the Smithsonian might be interested in? happy.gif

Reece, your photos show this Corsair has the identical nose hardware as my 1966 Sea Skiff, also built at the Corsair plant in Cortland, New York. I think I paid eighty bucks to have mine chromed, lol.

Info on the Renault motor ( Mercruiser )

November 13 2008, 5:07 AM

Not sure just what the connection was, but it was probably because it was a reliable and light weight motor, not much different than an outboard in power and weight, but housed inside the motor box. The Renault was used in a lot of different boats, via Mercury Marine. Here is some info.

WPS guidelines

November 13 2008, 7:16 AM

We'll try to get an official listing of the WPS boat buying requirements. That, along with the Kloka buy, flip, and trade up technique (KBFTU), you could soon be doing your own "how to" videos, getting your photo taken out front of a large waterfront mansion in Biscayne Bay!

Just curious, does the boat have a trailer lock right now? Is it parked where it can be accessed after dark? Stealing it would put you high on the WPS chart, and would allow you money left over for various maintenance and fuel issues, tires for the trailer, a new VHF radio, GPS, etc.

Paul

Trailer

November 13 2008, 7:27 AM

I looks like it is in a field in God's country, so stealing it may be a bit difficult. I dont think it has a trailer lock, but I am sure there are many dogs protecting it.. Dogs and Guns are not a good combination regardless of the risk / reward.

I am considering trading a motorcycle that has been sitting for a couple years, motorcycle value ~$1,500-$1,800.

Since this is obviously something I can flip on ebay for at least $50,000 I think it is worth considering. (Internet Schmuck).

What are you thoughts?

Trade

November 13 2008, 6:31 PM

Trade away! I'm sure it's far easier to replace an old $1800 bike than a Chris Craft Corsair. Considering all of the rotten, beat up old ones (with Eaton drives) out there, I'm surprised this isn't a "Look at my new boat" thread. Are you talking "even trade" for the bike? Man, there's no doubt what i would do...

Lose the bike

November 14 2008, 9:47 AM

You can kill yourself on an old (or new) bike a heck of a lot faster than you can on a classic Chris Craft. You might even be able to cut a deal with Metro Police Department, to buy your boat parts for you, just to keep you off the street. They're doing it for me, it's a win/win situation.

Re: Old Hickory

Heck no, Old Hickory won't be too rough on that boat at all, it's generally quite smooth, sometimes glass smooth. The comment about not seeing yourself in this boat means, you will not see someone else on Old Hickory driving a similar boat, because there arent any. This is a rare one.

As for the duck boat, don't bother painting it, the ducks on Old Hickory are accustomed to boats that have a white topsides.

New Boat Alert

November 13 2008, 2:23 PM

Paul,

Well Yes. I have bought/sold/bought all in about 6 weeks. The boat in NH has spent its life on Lake Winnipesaukee in a boathouse. I am the third owner. I suspect it was originally sold out of Irwin Marine in Laconia. It is entirely original and billed as very good to excellent. There is no bottom paint. It has orange/rust hullsides black bootstripe and a white bottom (all original gelcoat except for the stripe). The interior is white and orange stripes (yes, like a creamcicle happy.gif) It has the original 350Q and it has a rod knock. Yes, I had my wife's permission and yes she says I am nuts! I have spent the last week trying to arrainge to go get the boat. The hardest part has been a trailer. I owe a lot to a customer of mine who owns SeaLion Trailers. (I manufacture parts for him) I have purchased a new 5200# roller trailer for the Lancer to ride on. I am leaving on Sat. 22nd @ 3:00am to go to NH 400 miles one way. I expect to arrive around 11:00am. 2 hours to load and turn around. Home between 9:00 and 10:00 pm. I guess I will have to bribe Mark Weller for Q knowledge!

Oooohh Boy, here we go !! Another "almost Commander" !

November 13 2008, 3:14 PM

An investment, eh?

Under the guidelines of the WPS and KBFTUT, you know you're supposed to initially offer to remove the boat from the property for a hauling fee, assuming it's not sitting there at night for the taking, away from the dogs and direct line of fire.

If that fails, I think you're suppsed to call in Guido or Vinny, although it's not clear what happens next. I'm hoping to get a clarification on that one.

Sounds like you have a project going like my 20' Sea Skiff, maybe a little better. Should be fun. Send photos! happy.gif Here are some of the things I did on my 20' Skiff, and I have to tell you, it was for the most part, a great deal of fun. November 13 2008, 8:07 PM

Never ever call a couple of Italians guy to do a deal on a boat call a couple of Irish guys at least they grew up on an island. Call Seann and Mickey they can steal a boat trust me all those movies about Detriot are BS. Whenever the Italian's really needed a job done they called the Irish boys to do it cause they got it done. So you know where there is a boat with no trailer lock? hey my moms last name was Lyons and my dads mom was a Duffy trust me I know how to do whatever needs to be done. It's my problem now

November 13 2008, 2:22 PM

We all know the saying that starts out "the happiest day in a boat owner's life"

Well let's just say that there were 2 very happy people today in Glenview. I bought the Lancer.
I've been looking for one of these 23's for quite a while now. This particular one had my attention a couple of weeks ago at 2000. At 700, it seemed worth a 25 mile trip to look at. This boat had a lot going for it tht others I've looked at did not. For one, a brand new engine. (20 hours anyway) Secondly, it had one of the strongest looking trailers, I have ever seen. Finally, the hull itself is unpainted and very very clean. All gelcoat still. Some of the other things that looked good were the windshield. Many times these are twisted and corroded. This looked very clean and origninal. There was very little corrosion on any of the under deck metal. This is an I/O and I really think that is going to be better for my use. It leaves an enormous amount of space available in the area behind the driver. The gas tank looked very sound too, but that's yet to be determined for sure.

Weak points. The floor is totaled. It will ALL need to be replaced. The hull to deck joint looks iffy. I may have to pop the top and rebed. The Steering will need to be replaced or seriously gone through, and the tilt mechanism is non functioning. At least it HAS a tilt.

I'll get some pics up later tonight. I was telling my daughter about it in front of the Admiral tonight. As I was extolling the intrinsic value of my purchase, the Admiral interupted and said "It's an INVESTMENT" while rolling her eyes. Glad she's on board!!

Excuse me now while I bask in the glow of my infatuation with this latest purchase. The buzz may not last much longer.

Eric

Check out the post I just made for Paul and his new 23, and it has the list of things I did on my 20' "almost Commander". I have to tell you, although it was work, it was a great deal of fun, and in the end I have a boat we're very pleased with. Hope your project goes as well, those 23' hulls are just the ticket for Lake Michigan! Seeing Bill Policastro out there doing the fly-by in his 23 Commander makes me want to get one too!!! happy.gif

Thanks To The Commodore

November 13 2008, 5:33 PM

I am glad that Mark spoke up some time ago as to the values of old boats. We get carried away while shopping the Internet and assume "old Chris Craft" to mean RARE, COOL, STOUT, FAST, or INHERENTLY VALUABLE. I think we all can admit to being weak, a symptom common to sufferers of boatitus. When we see a neat Chris that reminds us of times gone by, we dream of owning it. We love our boats. That shouldn't mean we have to pay an arm and a leg for them if they aren't really worth it. Sellers can smell our weakness a marina away. The economy and the Weller Price Spectrum have empowered some buyers to work some very fair deals lately. It warms the heart, don't it...........Congratulations to all of you that have scored a new/old boat lately.

Here's a view along the front. The fiberglass is clean and fair. The gelcoat should buff up nicely. There's a barrier coat and copper bottom too. Very nicely applied.

I hope to do a little better with pictures soon.
