Response to Finding/reconstructing 38 Commander Helm Seats

Hi Sam,

First of all, WELCOME ABOARD !.

You and I both seem to have a rather unique distinction now, and that is the fact that I believe we both now own a boat previously owned by Tom Flower. When Steve gave me the tip about my 20' fiberglass Sea Skiff, he indicated he thought it had been owned by the same guy who he bought his 38 from (now belonging to you).

The tip came in on this forum one evening, and one thing lead to another. That boat has now cost me a bunch of money, most recently due to the fact that I bought another tow vehicle more equipped to haul it up our steep ridgetop. In any case, we love the boat. Here is the restoration thread in case you have not seen it.

Part of that restoration thread deals with the rebuilding of the seats. Although this was for a smaller boat, it would be an identical process for the 38. Take a look at this thread. It's a part of the other one I just referenced, but it goes directly to the seat rebuilding section.

I replaced my seats many years ago with a helm seat built by Todd Mfg. I am not sure that product is available any more. There may be some similar products, but you certainly can rebuild and reupholstery the original seats as shown in the referenced thread. I may even have some of the footrest stuff here in my shop, I'll take a look and see.

Regards,
