Paragon transmission questions ( 1979 )

Hi,

Two weeks ago, I bought a '79 CC Catalina 280, sgl. engine. The Paragon trans. plate reads: GF220 P32AR 1Z-771OR (I think). Numbers hard to read. Can you tell me what the numbers mean? I've ordered the Paragon Trans. manual that you have referred to.

Can I assume that if the trany lube is brown, it requires Trans. fluid. If black, 30W oil?

A mechanic is supposed to replace the water line, oil and filters later this week and I need to know what the trans. uses, since previous owner doesn't know.

Thanks so much. I hope to get the posting problem figured out ASAP. It's a huge benefit for owners.

Denis

Some info that may help !

First of all, "Welcome Aboard", we are a Commander based group here, but the Catalina is a great boat (too) and they share a lot of features, equipment, hardware, and technology with the Commander line. Here is some information that I hope will help.

The info we have here suggests you have the Paragon P3 series, in a 1.5:1 gear reduction. I am not aware of any of the Paragons that take a motor oil, all the ones I'm familiar with take ATF.

Hope this info helps you, please double check it, and proceed with caution. Your transmission seems to have another Alpha designation that doesn't appear in the charts we have here so please get another opinion if you can.

Regards, good luck,

Paul
