Mark Weller  (Login mweller)

Here is Tim coming home from Huron Boat Basin last Sunday.
I actually caught and passed Dunroin!!!
(Ok I know he was loafing but a guy can dream can't he)
We had some of the best cruising conditions both coming and going I have ever had on Lake Erie.

Nice, I'm envious of your blue water !

June 26 2008, 5:23 PM

I am always astounded at the quality of water on the Great Lakes system, whether it is at South Haven, Saugatuk, Hessel, Drummond Island, the Detroit River, Lake St. Clair, Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, or the St. Lawrence River, it's always looking nearly crystal clear.

Great photo of the Professor in action, thanks Mark. Looks like those rebuilt and finely tuned distributors are doing their job. Hey, did I hear he has a new dinghy?

Regards,

Paul

I am too

The only way the Tennessee River looks like that is if you really hit the liquor cabinet hard and wear those Blue Blocker sunglasses. You guys got the good water allright. Just think how miserable it must be in a Carver or Sea Ray up there on that nice water, lol.

Dinghy

June 30 2008, 5:59 AM

No Paul Tim did not get a new dinghy I did. I just purchased a Bombard Typhoon 305 from Boaters World with the Merc 9.9 I am thinking that it should be even faster than the old Quicksilver dinghy.

Motor and outdrive for my dinghy.

June 30 2008, 8:27 AM

It must be dinghy weather that is affecting all of us!

Finally, I am getting ready to trade my 10' Skimar for the 19.5 Welcraft that will be our "dinghy". This weekend I found an old tri hull with a SBC and OMC outdrive on her that will "drop" into the old Welcraft I am fixing up.

OK, so I lied to the wife about not buying or getting another boat until I got rid of a few others. But little white lies are symtoms of boatitus. Everyone should know that. Besides I bought the engine and outdrive not the boat. OK, technically, the engine and outdrive came with a boat attached. Anyway, we don't have a dog house and it is fun to sleep in the cuddy cabin.

I guess now I have to get caught up on SBC specs and stuff. Whew! SBC blue looks almost as good as Crusader 454 blue!

Some information on the 35-mph 600-hp 35' Commander

July 11 2008, 3:34 PM

CC was known to install 427 power in the 23' Commander, the 31' Sports Express, and then the next boat to get this kind of power moving up the line was the 35' Commander. The information below was taken from a 1970 or 71 catalog, it is hard to tell by looking becuase there is not printing date or date reference of any kind. The clue, however, is the so called "second generation 38' Commander" appears in this same catalog, so that helps tie down the time frame.

The more streamlined styleing never seemed to be all that well received by the 38' crowd, namely because everyone had grown accusomed to looking at the original lines of the 38 for six years, and the change was "different". On the 35, however, the styling works better and the 35 shows the fact that this boat was a part of that "swoopy" design philosophy from the start.

To many people this is "the ideal Commander". It isn't too big, not too small, still able to take heavy weather. I point out that the 31' Commander is also able to take serious water, and this has been proved over and over again by Heidi Pigeon and Paul LeRoux during their many voyages on the English Channel in a 31' Commander.

The 35 is s significant step up in interior size, beam and heft, and of course with the optimum power offering, it is very well powered too. The advertized speed of a 427 powered 35 is 35-mph. That is by all accounts, fast enough to water ski behind!

Regards,

Paul

Commander hull, look at that first lifting strake

July 12 2008, 6:38 AM

I just copied your photo image from above to my post here, to discuss the lifting strake. That photo shows how it is working to give the cushion ride, better than any other photo I have seen lately. That strake is there for a reason, not just for looks, and it appears on many Commander models.
