I looked for a good while earlier this year for gps for my 22' Regal. I ended up getting a Magellan Crossover GPS. It was $300 and the $100 for the lake maps. It works good for a small gps, but it is small. One thing I can say is don't get a magellan. If you are even considering it Call their support. Its outsourced to India and the service is pathetic.
I bought the downloadable maps online and I was supposed to be able to download them in an hour. It took over a month for them to send me the email with the 'link' to the webserver. When I called all they said was the server was down. I sent an email to everyone I could find at that company with a complaint.
This unit was good for me since I could actually use it in the car also. I would love to get a larger dispay with all of the goodies integrated like GPS/ Fishfinder / RADAR etc, but I don't think my admiral will approve that purchase.
I will use the Magellan for Navigation and I will learn how to use the existing Si-TEX LORAN for backup navigation. ( LOL)
On the river I see a few spots that look a little tricky. I am somewhat familiar on Old Hickory having made several late night trips from Anchor Hi back to Laguardo.
We have actually ran aground in daylight after a marker was moved about 50' away, it was sand and we were going slow but it shows you how tricky this lake is. |
