Backfiring is caused by lean mixtures. It sounds like the carb is going lean..as the secondaries open, the velocities thru the venturis drop, and the carb goes super lean. Holley uses an accelerator on their "double pumpers" for this reason. 327's are pretty small (sorry) and may not need as much throttle opening as the secondaries provide. I think you can adjust the opening point of the secondaries..delay it as long as possible and see what happens. This is an example of too much not being good.
