Those copper pipes that connect to the transmission are, indeed, a pain. They are fitted to the point, but unless they are exactly aligned, they will NOT seal or fit up right. At least that is my experience, and it appears yours too now.
Hopefully the main seals will get softened with the oil, unless you happen to be using a synthetic which I hope you are not for the break in period, and seal off everything for you. I think your particular motor has plenty of venting, so there is little chance it is being pressurized and forcing oil out the seals.
One thing you said that is 100% right. It is just about impossible to get a boat to the "turnkey" status quickly. It takes time, shakedown cruises, trial and error on what you did, what you did not do (yet), and what still will need to be done. Running a boat, especially a classic, is a never ending task of keeping your eye on several balls that need to stay bouncing all the time. Personally, I wouldn't have it any other way.
