Yes Robm, you have a good point here. It depends on the type of oil cooler. If it is the kind like they put on the 427, you have NO oil circulation at all, it is just a proximity cooler by running a stream of water adjacent to the oil pan, and if that rusts out then water can get to the oil.
Oil under pressure going thrugh a heat exchanger type cooler would likely have some pressure behind it and if so it would be tough for water to overcome the pressure and get into the oil supply. I think some of the oil coolers are under next to no pressure, so it could well be coming from the oil cooler. Finding the leak can be a real bugger.
