Response to Push rods huh? |
| Hi Eric,
I had a reason for mentioning pushrods, and the reason was to see if everything on your valve train was in order. If you have a bent pushrod or a clearance that is waaaay too big, or even a loose rocker arm or rocker stand, then this would most likely show up with a simple look at the pushrods. If you are in there, looking at them is just a few seconds of time too.
I mention looking at the valve train just from experience, knowing this is something that must be checked from time to time, and also knowing a 427 will run on 7 cylinders quite nicely even if you bent one of those pushrods. I don't think this is the issue, I actually think Bill pegged it, but on these old boats it pays to check various things, and sometimes you have more than one thing working against you at the same time. The 427 is an awesome motor, very little can go wrong that can not be fixed. I'm curious how your diagnostic will go.
Does the noise subside at higher rpm, say 2000? Normally you get the clanging down around 500 to 700 when the motor is idling way down.
The catastrophic issues like spun bearing don't seem like that is an issue due to your good oil pressure. A loose wrist pin would probably not sound off if you pulled the plug wire as you mentioned you did. There still could be something under that valve cover making noise, since this happened to me in the past, it could also happen to you.
Good luck,
Keep me posted!
Regards,
Paul |
