I bought 5/4 in the rough. After finishing I used stock that was 1" strong. I suppose after fairing and finish sanding I am still at 1" thick for my toerails. As far as I can tell from the portion of the original toerails under the never removed hardware, the toerails left the factory somewhere between 1/2 and 5/8's of an inch in thickness. I did not feel that resawing my 5/4 was a viable option. I decided I would leave extra thickness for the next knuckle head F/O (future owner) with a jitter bug sander to go to town. I like the beefier look and think it was the right choice. After all why leave an even bigger pile of gold dust on the shop floor in the name of originality.
