The condenser..a capacitor..helps prevent the points from arcing and pitting. If your points experience excessive metal transfer, the condenser is probably the cause. Too great a dwell angle also causes the points to overheat and burn. A faulty condenser weakens the spark and causes alot of problems that mimmick other causes.
