Carbon fouled plugs
This is very common visual condition on our race engines. Soft, black, sooty, dry-looking carbon. This indicates a rich mixture, weak ignition or wrong heat range plug (too cold).
You will first need to verify plug heat range. On carbureted engines, check choke as well as choke pull-off (if equipped) for proper function and adjustment. Lastly on all engines, check for vacuum leaks and weak spark or low voltage output.
Also check your voltage to the pertronix unit they are not happy with low volts you want to make sure you have the correct voltage going to the pertronix unit. Also 900 rpm in neutral sounds kind of high for a 427 with paragons mine are set around 750 or so and in gear drop to 500 but I set my idle in gear to 500.
I would suspect the choke fist as some of those afb's a a little touchy to get right with the counter weight system they use, one of the reasons I like the AVS.
Maybe Tim will chime in here as he knows the 427 better than I do and take what ever he tells you to the bank. All you would need to do is hear his motors start once. |
