Rotation

Response to As the Prop Turns....

When looking from behind the boat, props traditionally spin
Right Hand on the Starboard (right) side.
Left Hand on the Port (left) side.

This has been the traditional rotation for twin engine applications for many years, and it wouldn't be a good idea to try to back-yard engineer something different, although I believe there are lots of fishing boats out there with twins spinning in the same direction, as an economy measure.

You can pick up a pair of new GM big blocks and use a transmission that is able to do the rotation either way you want. Some of the paragons are reversable too, internally. I understand this is a simple operation (on some models) but having never done this I can't give any advice or tips.

I would look for a pair of take out motors that are in demonstrable running condition, all there, complete with everything you'll need. That's the best cost factor for you.

Otherwise, I'd get either a new Crusader setup, completely engineered with transmissions and all components, or last choice...I'd buy the bare GM motors and do the outfitting myself.

The latter is likely to cost as much as the engineered system from Crusader. I saw a recent post about a pair of GM big block take outs, that were totally there with 600 hours, for something like $5000. If the equipment is good, ("if") then that is a sweet deal. They'll drop right in. Gear ratio needs to be 2.5:1 on a 38.

Regards,

Paul
