Hello Roy,
We used an orbital palm sander with 80-grit paper. We took the bottom down to the innermost layer of paint, not quite into the gelcoat. There is no gelcoat damage anywhere except a couple places where we used and industrial marine epoxy to fill and fair. I think you had visions of us using a solid disc buffing sort of sanding machine, and yes, you could call me "El Macho" if I had done that!
We are basically ready to start putting paint back on the boat, but since we have lots of other work to do too, we are in no hurry. We just want to do it right, so the boat won't have to be pulled out anytime soon.
