Your point about the added drag of the underwater gear is valid, and I have already repeated your info on another thread. The sharing and cross-pollenization of good information like this is great.
I posted the info about beware of crate motors, on numerous occasions in the past. People who think they're getting a sneaky deal, sometimes do get that gutless taxi motor. In addition, I really think some of them got 307 motors instead of the 350 they thought they would get. Once on the shop floor all bolted up, how are they going to really tell? I know one guy who put his new so-called "crate motor" in his boat, and the darn thing would not even get on a plane with 3 or 4 guys aboard. It was probably one of those motors that developed the power and torque rating way up on the RPM band, and never had the guts to reach that point. Any such use of an automotive type setup like that is sure to be a bottle rocket burn-out when it comes to longevity.
