I agree, a swim platform is a big safety feature. An elderly man, now deceased, who was one of my dock neighbors a few years ago, who also had something like 200 depth charged dumped on his submarine in WW-II, was walking the docks one day and his little beloved dog fell into the water. He jumped in to save the dog. The dog didn't make it.
They found my friend clinging to a swim platform at the dock yelling for help. Had it not been for that platform, he would have been in big trouble.
For kids, same thing goes. If you're out there swimming, it's going to be the place of refuge. My main concern is the vulnerability in docking, and the maintenance issues to a lesser degree.
