Hi Steve, I also have a '69 and experienced similar problems with my port engine. I found when I was backfiring I had a burnt plug, I mean the tip was gone. I installed a New loaner distributor and still had the problem. I swapped carbs and the problem went away. I have Edlebrocks with a wedge and a 1/4'' plate hence 3 gaskets under the carb. I tried to omit the 1/4'' plate but modifications are necessary to the linkage to keep it from hitting the manifold. I bet I had a lean condition. I was running 40k volt coil with splitfire plugs. Now back to Champion and Standard (brand) ignition parts. Now my engine fire up immediately. I also needed to clean and adjust distributors to advance properly. oh, 1400 hrs on mine.
