stair tread grip

Has anyone got any experience with painting grip stripes onto teak? I've been on boarding stairs with abrasive strips on the treads to prevent slipping. They're very effective and not too hard on the eyes if cleanly cut in.

I'm told that I can put an off-the-shelf sand like substance into the varnish and brush this on in the last coat. Does anyone know of a particular product for this? Is this durable? Is it easy to clean?
