Many years ago I tossed the plastic cabin lights that were stock items from Chris Craft. I found a very nice "real glass lens" light with a stainless steel base, and these have graced TRADITION for years. Now I understand you can get this same light in a LED (light emitting diode) configuration. John Clemans, senior editor of Motor Boting Magazine, was the first one to tell me about this, and since then I've seen them for sale. The main benefit is the fact that a LED light burns very little electricity and it generates no heat. Therefore if you're out running on battery power without the gen set running, a LED lighting scheme won't drain down your battery for a very LONG time.
Since I believe details make the boat, here is a detail that we reconciled years ago. If you are still running the old milky plastic lens that came on the boat, it's time to change. Since LED fixtures are available that look identical to this, I recommend going the LED route.
While this light fixture uses the old fashioned heat producing bulb, it has a real glass lens, and the stainless steel case looks great. I recommend anyone who has not changed out their orignal lights to do so, because the upgrade is significant. If you do it now, go for the LED fixture that looks identical to this one!
