the reason for putting the 'flat' side out is that when the pin works back-and-forth, the rounded side of the spiro-lock will, if toward the aluminum, have a tendency to be far more easily deformed 'inward' and therefore pushed out. One of the best possible ways to lose a cylinder wall.
