I'm having a problem with my 88 non-turbo gxl rx-7. When I hit around 5200 rpm or so, I have a hesitation. Once I get past 6000 or so, it does fine. I've replaced the coils, spark plugs, tested the fuel injectors, replaced the fuel filter, and everything else I could think of. Please HELP!!! Thanks.

It could...

...be 2 things (off the top of my head).
1. You could have a clogged cat. Does it go smoothly after the hesitation or does it seem forcefull?
2. Any cracks in the hoses? Could be leaking somewhere?

Bill, your ideas?

With a clogged cat (that's always such a funny sounding expression to me - "Smelly cat - what have they been feeding you" - Oh, sorry), I would expect the power to suffer past a certain rpm and not recover, but it is a possibility if there's only partial clogging. I think the test would be, after it recovers and you're over 6k, does it bog if you try to accelerate pretty hard beyond 6k? Or does it do OK.

Checking vacuum lines is a good idea. Beyond that, it's a guess - maybe a sensor or something, which I'm pretty weak in, and they're hard to troubleshoot by remote control anyway.

Doing fine, Chris. Job hunting, but I got a 3 month severence package - so not time to panic, yet. Got some good possibilities, but you know how it is - you don't count on anything until you have it, or the fat lady sings, or whatever. Hows by you?

(Thanks, Kevin, for letting Chris and I borrow your thread for a little bit for a little chat - any progress on your hesitation problem?)

... same old, same old.
Just gearing up for this year's spring (finally).
Sucks to hear you don't have the same stability that I have. But I'm pretty sure something will come up soon.
This winter has been brutal.
Just live one day at a time....

So what's the status on the hesitation Kevin?

So, are you saying...

...that I'm unstable? (I know what you meant - er, I think.) 8^)

I asked my mechanic about the cat and he doesn't seem to think it would be that. It hesitates in the low rpm sometimes also, just not as bad. It does it really bad and almost always between and 5200 rpm and 6000 or so but it does usually smooth out after that point. Thanks for your interest and help.

... what did the mechanic say it could be?

Hey Bill,

Did you check out Caroline's entry. I think she just popped up for that 1 day.

I have a 1990 mazda rx7 gtu and i have the same problem. the only diffrence is that my car is running extremely rich. i e-mail'ed 2 professional rx7 websites and they said the following:

There's a single green connector next to the leading coil. Ground it, and turn the ignition on. Watch the check engine light.
Most likely your problem is with the Throttle Position Sensor....... this one came from Mazda Trix located in CA www.mazdatrix.com..... they have everything for 2nd gen rx7's

Your message was forwarded to Jim Mederer, Racing Beat's co-founder and
chief engineer for review. His reply is as follows:

Sorry, no magic. It would be wise to have a Mazda dealer read the codes
that are set in your ECU. As a guess, the throttle sensor is an obvious
suspect. If you are willing to invest some time, open EVERY electrical
connector in the engine compartment looking for white, powdery corrosion - a
large problem with these older cars. If you find any, scrub it out and
apply a bit of grease to the contacts to slow further corrosion.

.................this one came from team fc3s... also a highly recommended website.... www.teamfc3s.com
(fc3s is the japan termonology for rx7

I hope this helps you. let me know. jso22@aol.com another website is www.racingbeat.com located in CA
