timing

i cant seem to get the timing set right on my 89 mazda 626 the distubator cap isnt matching the book and i have to set it 4 gears advanced to even get it to run and then it looses power when i put it in gear

Unless you have the wiring to the plugs wrong, chances are that the valve timing is incorrect, possibly because the timing belt has slipped. Get a Haynes manual for the car and check out the whole procedure.

What problem caused you to start fooling with the distributor?
