You can try a product such as this one (http://www.por15.com/) to stop the rust, then apply a patch over the hole. Or you can cut out the rusted area, prime it with a rust resistant primer, then apply a patch. An auto body shop can also give you options.

The best way to repair an area such as this is to find some sheet metal approximately the same gauge. Cut out a square or retangular piece that is a little larger than the hole. If the area is curved then shape the piece. Now weld it in place. If you or a friend don't have a welder then call around. Most small weld shops will do this job for $10-25. It will take them all of 2-3 minutes. Grind area smooth and body fill (if needed). Now spray some primer and paint on it and you ready to go.

it wasnt a hole in the trunk door, it was between the rubber trunk seal and the body, the part that the trunk door covers up.i dont get how it got there, its a florida car. i ended up using that rubber kitchen and bathroom sealer that comes in those caulk tubes, and that sealed it up perfectly.

I doubt that your repair will hold up permanently if the hole was caused by rust. Good luck. though.

Florida air is salty, and salt is the mother of all the means to make a car turn to rotting metal...

Take it from someone living in a country where they spill tons of salt on the roads yearly, to get the ice to melt in winter... It does wonders on destroying bodywork!

I was amazed to see that my 1988 323 had very little rust in 1999 (when I got it, virtually none outside, just inside a rear door), but I'm now at the point where reconstructive esthetic surgery is a must, if only to keep the safety patrol's attention away from the car (holes in doors and the such are a big indication that maybe the mechanical side of the car's on the go too)

One good way to fix a small hole in a trunk is to use fiberglass cloth soaked in resin. buy a fiberglass repair kit at Autp zone or other part store for about $ 12. Then use supplied screen mesh as backing and follow instructions on mixing the resin with hardener. Then soak the pre-cut fiberglass cloth in resin and apply over the mesh over the hole. You can apply several layers. I performed a repair like this on an older car and it turned out great.
