Suspicious..., oppinions?

Maybe it's just me, but does anybody else find anything suspicious about this:

For SALE
1993 Mazda MX6
60k miles
1500 first offer

This didn't sound right to me, but I don't know a lot about cars.
I called the guy up. I asked about the miles, he said 60k, so I thought it had to be on a new engine maybe? I asked, and he said it was tthe original engine. I made him repeat it 2 or 3 times because I didn't believe him. And he assured me it was the original engine. But he even sounded suspicious on the phone. Besides that, he's a college student, and I don't see how a student would have a '93 car with only 60k miles on the original engine.

We're gonna take a look at it tomorrow, but frankly, me, nor any of my friends or family know much about cars.

Does anybody have any suggestions on how we could verify that it only has 60k miles on the ORIGINAL engine? I guess I could, obviously, look at the odometer or whatever, but can't thos ebe rigged somehow (illegaly, I'm sure) to display whatever he wants? And even if it is 60k miles, is there any way to see if the engine was rebuilt or whatever?

I'm a high school student and I'm looking for my first car. Unlike many other, whose parents have bought their cars and pay their insurance, I've worked for a year now, saving most of my money, and I finally have 2000 in my bank. I'd hate to waste my earnings on something that's junk and unreliable.

My other option is a '93 Toyota Paseo w/ 110k miles, being sold by a dealer for 2000. That sounds more realistic, if not overpriced (depending on its condition). I'd really like the Mazda, even if it has 100-115k miles on it, but 60k miles just doesn't sound right. And if he's trying to hide the miles on the car, who knows what else might be wrong with it (especially at only 1500$). Any advice or oppinions would be great.

There's a good chance that it only has 60K original miles. I have a 2000 Ford Ranger with only 20K. It's possible it was a second vehicle that didn't get driven much. When you take a look at the car ask him for the maintenance records this should give you an accurate count. When you go make sure you take somebody that knows cars and what to look for. Be wary if the person selling it doesn't want you to take it for a test drive for any reason. I've heard excuses from I'm almost out of gas to I don't have insurance. This indicates something is seriously wrong with the car and they don't want you to know. Good luck and I hope this helps.

Thanks. We're going to take a look at it this afternoon, so I don't know if you'll have time to respond to this or not, but can't we also get the VIn number from the dash, and look up its records online or something?

Yes you can. You can go online. I believe there is a nominal charge for this though. Try kelley blue book online. I'm not sure of the URL but you can google it. Good Luck.

Carfax.com can supply this history, small charge. If truly 60K miles, the vehicle should be essentially perfect, and be perfect under the hood as well. When I looked at my 1988 B2200 in 1994 (40K miles then) I opened the hood, then immediately shut it because it looked TOO GOOD, thought at first that someone had been in a wreck and had everything replaced new, but it was just that nice. At 60K miles, seats, pedals, etc. can help give clue to mileage.

Well, we called again today (this time me speaking) and now he told me that it has 100k miles. Which even at that many miles I'd still take in a heartbeat if taken care of. But I won't, because I'm not trusting any dishonest sellsperson.
