I have a 92 b2200 pickup that idles very, very high when it starts. It stays high when it warms up and after i put it into gear. I changed the carburetor as recommended by a local repair shop- didn't fix the problem. When you start it the Tach immediately goes up to 5-7rpm. I changed the fuel filter also. Any suggestions as to what the problem might be.

First of all did you change the gasket between the carb and the intake. If the engine is sucking air, it will idle extremely high. A good test to see if it is sucking air around the base of the carb, is to use a can of WD_40 with the extension tube on the nozzle and spray around the base of the carb. If the idle changes, then you have found your place that the engine is sucking in more air than it is suppose to be. Leaks as described change the air fuel mixture by alot and the idle will go thru the roof. The described test should be performed on an engine that has been started COLD and please pull it outside of the garage or building, as WD-40 is flammable, so be careful not to spray it onto the exhaust manifold.
