My 1996 626 stalls when placed in park. It does not matter whether I drive it for 5 minutes of 5 hours, once placed in park, it stalls and then hesitates to start again. After sitting for awhile, it will start right up again. I have placed fuel injector cleaner and cleaned the throttle plate. It idles around 700-800. Any suggestions?

Hope I can help... Is it a v6 or 4cyl??? V6 models are prone to problems with the ignitor in the distributor. Sometimes the 4cyl will have the same problem. Check to see, whether or not, there is spark. If you are unsure how to , ask someone who knows, as this is a very high voltage system. If there is no spark, the distributor will likely have to be replaced. Also, but unlikely, check the airtube between the air cleaner housing and the throttle body for cracks between the ribs. Replace if required. Let me know how you make out!

The car is a 4 cyl and I just gave the car a tune up about 5 months ago, which entailed replacing the distributor. I have checked the hoses and there seems to be nothing wrong with them. I had a tail pipe replaced about a month ago and the next day is when this started to happen. Everyone keeps telling me that the tail pipe would have nothing to do with the stalling.
