I was driving 60-70MPH in my Mazda and I saw "Check Engine" light comes on. It was on for several miles then the light turned it self off "Whoof"! I wonder what could that be? Has anyone encountered this error before?

Could be oxygen sensors or Knok Sensors.

It could be a dwarf living in your air cleaner and farting into the intake causing electrical malfunction.

If the engine check lights light is caused by Oxygen sensors, would this mean I need a new one? Is that something like pre-failure? Because the lights does not come on at city driving. (whew).

Spoke to my mechanic and he is 80% sure it's the O2 sensor. Have you changed yours yet. I will work on replacing this weekend. Going to Mazda Recycling in Rancho Cordova, CA. They have cheap stuff.....

i had my engine light come on too, then spent $500 to replace "faulty" O2 sensors. and whaddaya know, the light came back on about an hour after i drove it out of the auto shop. i keep coming back to have the mechanic figure out whats going on....as of this writing its still up in the air.... he tried different things and keeps resetting the light. however it just comes back on and on and on.
my idling is really weird now... kind of makes a 'cycling' sound (like a washing machine) and i sometimes get pinging during acceleration (even with the highest octane "supreme" gas from Chevron)
anyone having the same problems and want to compare notes feel free to email me

I got the same problem with you and completely knew what the problem was when I failed the emission test.
My car had too much CO.
I finally spent $450 to replace 2 oxygen censors......

Knocking

This is to Stacy. In reference to the knocking sound coming from the tire when you turn a certain way it is the C.V. joint. Whenever they are worn out they will make a knock or clunking noise depending on the way you turn. But the check engine light, there is a way to reset the computer in the car that might help. Take the ground wire off of the battery for 15-20 seconds. That causes the computer to go into reset mode. Hope that helps.

We have a 99 S model and have 67k on the car, bought new. Just went thru the 60k maint, $1600.00. Car went in to shop last week with the red light, something about vacum hose and something else like fuel system cleaning. Well it's back 4 days later. I am blaming myself for buying this car and now wish I had stayed with Honda, never had these issues and expenses....
