I thought I posted this message already. I hope it doesn't show up twice.
First, I spend my mornings bottomless. It is too cool at home not to wear something but if I wear a sweatshirt and something on my feet, that seems to be enough, provided I am more or less active. In otherwords, aside from the shirt, I'm naked where it counts. I certainly feel the cool air down below but I am quite comfortable, even in the chilly parts of the house like the basement and the garage. But then I leave for work.
It has been below freezing in the morning lately. I wear the same dress pants year round but I can tell when I'm not wearing regular underwear. I'm cold when I sit down. Jeans are fine, however, they are warm enough to forego underwear but not dress pants. My car doesn't have heated seats, either, although my wife's car does.
So the question is, how cold does it have to get before the dedicated freeballer will wear more clothes than usual?

It never gets too cold for me to freeball... but I live in Florida.
However even when I lived up north I don't think I found freeballing a problem in the winter. The genitals are warmth by a abundance of warm blood right from the abdomen and don't get cold like hands and feet and other extremities.

I just spent a week in Chicago. It was quite cold compared to the south. The shock from the first gust of wind was quite interesting; however, nature took over and my hands and legs really were the only thing cold. It is great how the body responds naturally to weather.
When we got to the 30's in Alabama, I have to agree that seats in the car (not heated) are interesting when I first sit down; however, within the first mile or so, things are quite fine and adjusted.
This is a great discussion you've got going.

I live in Chicago and have been full time for close to three years. 501's most of the time, but Dockers on occasion. I haven't had any problems yet, but with dress pants, I am wearing a dress shirt tucked in. So, it adds an extra layer. Plus, I am not outside that long on really cold days. For trips downtown, I use the bus and train so I am outside for maybe 10 to 15 minutes at any given time with a long coat and gloves. Car isn't any problem either, but it has cloth seats. No garage so the car is as cold as the outside temperature, which today is in the low 30's F.

I hate to admit it, having started this thread, but I tend to agree with the two previous posters that it doesn't really get too cold for freeballing, all other things being equal. Frankly, I only notice it when I'm sitting on a cold seat and then only at first. Everything's all warmed up by the time I've covered the first two miles on the highway. Furthermore, I can only tell the difference when I'm wearing briefs or not wearing briefs. This ignores those times when I'm wearing something else, like long johns. When bottomless, as I mentioned, I only notice a little cool air on my bare skin, but no more than I notice on my bare legs. Everything else stays quite warm, thank you.

I find that I at least need to have something on my feet. When I am bottomless (and I wish I could put that so it sounded better) and doing chores around the house or just puttering around, I wear work boots. Not thick Vibram soled clodhoppers but 8" work boots nonetheless. I have long decided that I have to wear something to keep my feet warm and usually my toes protected. Wearing boots isn't that special; sneakers would do fine. But the shoes or boots stay on even after I'm well warmed up and able to stay comfortable in a chilly house even when naked. One person said that was the ultimate freeballing. I say it is "face all over."
I have hiked naked on the Applachian Trail totally naked (except for my boots, again) when the temperature was, I think, below 60, and again on another trail not far away (the trail to Signal Knob, near Elizabeth Furnace) also on a day that started out at about the same temperature. On the first hike it was a little foggy and not the slightest breeze stirring, while the other turned sunny, though never warm. I also did another hike in the rain wearing only a poncho, which allowed me to pass other people and even walk for a ways down a public highway.
Actually, to do such things nude or virtually so, it can't really be at all windy and you will find that although you may be comfortable enough while active, your skin will feel surprisingly cold to the touch. None of these hikes lasted longer than eight hours, so I couldn't really say what it would be like for an all day outing, nude on a 60 degree day. The sun sure helps, I know.

I just wanted to ask, is it actually 'legal' to hike naked on the Appalachian Trail? Don't park rangers (or whoever?), cite you for public nudity or indecent exposure?
Although I've hiked for miles on the paths in the wooded areas of many of the larger nude resorts, I've never hit any trails nude in a regular 'textile' environment; it's something I'd really like to try though sometime!
By the way, I seem to recall your saying you grew up in West Virginia and now live in NOVA, so do you ever visit Avalon at Paw Paw? What part of WV were you raised?
I now live in western Maryland (Cumberland) where I can leave PA, cross MD and be over the Potomac and be in West Virginia in about half an hour
I too, am quite comfortable this time of the year, in the house, wearing only a Tee or light sweatshirt and a pair of topsiders. - I DO, however wear a pair of clean sox to sleep in though, since my feet tend to get cold sometimes at night LOL
Jeans and sweatpants are the ONLY 'long pants' I ever wear, and I'm still 'going commando' when out and driving around 'as usual', but the Jeep DOES have heated seats!
Feel free to email me if you'd like to chat about 'nekkid' hiking; or just 'hangin' out' nude - dude!
Have a GR8 freeballing / 'pants free' Holiday Season!

No, it isn't legal to be nude in public on the Appalachian Trail or anywhere in Shenandoah Park, not that it has ever stopped me. Usually one does not meet very many people on most trails in the park anyway, and often none at all, so it is not that much of a risk. To be sure there is some risk in being seen naked but so far, there have been no negative consequences. I have been "caught" naked several times with varied reactions. Once I was sitting at an overlook, nude, when a lady walked out through the bushes. She apologized for intruding on my privacy, so different people clearly have different attitudes toward other people. Some would not be so forgiving.
I have always covered up with a pair of knit gym shorts that can easily be slipped on when necessary. I'm sure that takes the edge off any potential conflict. I'm tempted to just stay naked but I haven't gone that far yet. I would also like to do a long hike without taking any shorts along but I wouldn't attempt that on the Applachian Trail.
I am from Princeton, West Virginia. I graduated from WVU in Morgantown. I actually started hiking nude when I was still in high school. When I was in college I had a 4x4 vehicle (a 1965 Land Rover, I'm proud to say) and consequently did little hiking, nude or otherwise. I was more timid then, I think. Besides, four-wheelers are like cowboys. They don't like to walk.
I haven't been to the Avalon club, though I've heard of it but I did visit the Pen-Mar club near Hancock. That was years ago. I usually pass by the Whitetail club or resort near Chesapeake, Virginia, but I have never stopped. Frankly, I'm not a joiner.
Returning to the subject of nude hiking or public nudity, I believe it is only legal in a few parks in the west. There are frequent references to various hot springs on forums on the subject of nude hiking. I've never had a first hand report of a nude hiker being cited, though I have heard reports of naked people on the Outer Banks being cited for nudity, which is ridiculous, given the area. As you probably know, the Outer Banks of North Carolina are about one mile wide and a hundred miles long, at least half of that being "national seashore," and mostly a long ways from crowds. But apparently they insist on family friendly beaches.
Trails in the mountains may or may not be family friendly but in 30 years I have encountered more rangers than children, meaning younger than high school age, and those I could count on the fingers of one hand. I rarely pass more than a half-dozen people on any given outing on any trail, though there have been notable exceptions. As it is, I try for trails where I won't meet anyone or at least go out on days when I expect less trail traffic. But even that is no guarantee.
In the summer of 2007 I made an all day visit to a trail near Elizabeth Furnance (which I mentioned above) at the northern end of George Washington National Forest, just a few miles from Front Royal. It turned out to be one of the most enjoyable hikes I have ever done and I did all but about two minutes of it nude except for my trail shoes. I passed some campers about half-way and slipped on my shorts when I went by both coming and going. I think I walked about eight miles, at least according the map at the trailhead, perhaps a little further. I started about 6:00 AM and returned to my car at about noon. Not five minutes after I got back a school bus pulled into the parking lot and 20 or 30 middle school-aged kids got out and literally ran up the trail.
Timing is everything.

Thanks for taking the time to respond and explain about the Appalachian Trail and Shenandoah Park. I have family who's been in Front Royal for more than 60 years, but really never spent much time in the area, although it sure is beautiful!
A few years back I bought several pairs of nylon shorts (which I've never worn) that fold up and store to an extremely small package (conveniently 'in their own pocket'), so they would be great to wear for a nude hike and strip off on a trail, since they are so compact and easy to carry - now I just have to try them out sometime
I'd never heard of Princeton before, but am very familiar with WVU. I really never spent much time in West Virginia, but we did have relatives in Fairmont, and as a young child in the late '50s we used to go through Morgantown to visit them usually once a year. I always enjoyed the drive south of Morgantown and watching the big barges on the river.
Did you ever venture east to Cumberland when you were attending WVU? This place sure was a 'jumpin' city (pre '80s; hard to believe that at one time Cumberland WAS the second largest city - next to Baltimore - in the entire state), and just like you posted earlier, most all women wore hats and gloves to shop downtown, back when we came here to shop in the late '50s / early '60s!
What got you started hiking nude in the first place, since you say you were
more timid back then? Your analogy of "four-wheelers and cowboys" brought a smile to my face.
I too am not much of a joiner either, and have never belonged to a landed club even though both Pen-Mar and Avalon are only 35 miles from my house! I've visited both on occasion, and have belonged to both TNS and ANAR (ASA) since the early '90s (mostly to get the newsletters and the gr8 glossy mag that TNS publishes), plus being a member of either group helps a single male gain entry to many 'quota oriented' resorts.
Pen Mar is a pretty rustic but very friendly club I always felt. Avalon, on the other hand, is a lot more 'upscale' reminds me more of Pine Tree (near Annapolis) or Turtle Lake in Michigan.
I first became aware of TLR back in 1995. when they advertised they were having a three day "Nudestock" concert, and the group lineup sounded fantastic, so I just had to attend.
I'd missed going to the 'original' Woodstock the summer of 1969 'cause I was working fulltime (my junior summer of high school) to buy my first 'vette, and just felt I couldn't afford to take time off from work, back then, so I had to go to this one! After spending a week there, I left Turtle Lake and drove to the TNS gathering in New York and spent a few more days 'hanging out' - pun intended - before I found my way back home via Baltimore and a brief stay with a nudist bud at his place both in his Columbia apartment and a few days at his 'second home'; Pine Tree.
Pine Tree was where I first encountered 'social nudity' back in 1993, and it was then and there that I became a 'nude sleeper' and when dressing to drive home after a week of being naked 24/7, that I became a fulltime FREEBALLER!
I've also spent some time at Whitetail while visiting the Williamsburg area on vacation and it's a nice place too; I'd highly recommend stopping by sometime if you have an extra few hours or a day to spare.
Sounds like your timing sure was perfect the day you decided to visit the trail near Elizabeth Furnace! The 'rugrats' would have driven me bonkers even HAD I been fully clothed and encountered them while hiking on the trail LOL

Princeton is in the very southern part of the state ten miles from Bluefield. We moved from there to the next county when I was in high school. One place I lived in Princeton was near woods and I liked to ramble around there. I got the idea of trying to get an all-over tan, which is something I've never been able to do. From sunbathing nude somewhere in the woods, it is only a short step to hiking nude or just plain walking around nude, also called "running around naked." The place we moved to was in the country and I suddenly had acres and acres of woods, all on our property to roam over and as soon as it was warm enough, I would leave the clothes behind and go exploring, just like that. I took nothing with me and only wore something on my feet. No one else was aware I was doing anything like that (as far as I know). I was a perfect place for that.
I was much too timid to do that anywhere else so it was a while before I attempted any outdoor nudity away from home, but sooner or later I did, which was when I was in college and after the army. I may have mentioned that I was more of a four-wheeler and didn't do so much hiking. I never thought of driving nude but I also remember the summers seemed to be so short.
The school bus that I mentioned was a real surprise but no harm done. It looked like they were on a multi-activity outing since some of them were wearing bathing suits. It would have been interesting had I still been on the trail but you could have heard them coming.
I sent you an e-mail the other day, so check that if you don't do it every day.

I just checked a WV map after reading your last post, and much to my surprise I've been very close to Princeton twice within the last year (driving on I-77) - small world isn't it!
Living near woods while actually living in the city is pretty cool, and then moving to the country was even more conducive to being able to roam around and enjoy nature "au naturale"
I grew up out in the country and did go skinny dipping a time or so in the river near my home, but never did any nude walks.
I was a shy guy myself, being an only child; even to the point of being 'really uptight' the summer before junior high (and my first PE classes were to start), since I'd never been around anybody 'in the nude' before, and heard we all to use the 'gang shower' after gym class.
I can only remember the guys wearing white briefs (NO boxers - they were for OLD MEN back then) and I do not think there was ANYBODY who did NOT wear underwear, plus we ALL had to wear jockstraps for PE. Jocks & 'showers after gym' WERE mandatory to pass PE back then - boy how times have changed LOL
Yea, I'm sure you'd have heard THAT group of youngsters coming from quite a distance, since most kids that age are very vocal - especially when they're having fun!
I somehow missed your email, so please re-send!
Never got above freezing here in the Maryland mountains today and a bit windy, so it was a little chilly to be out and about - BUT they're calling for low 50s tomorrow and the next day, so freeballing in my old thin sweats should be a bit more comfortable!

I'll make another attempt at an e-mail in a minute.
I was also an only child, and sometimes thought of as quiet, though not exactly shy. I couldn't say how much I've changed. I like to try all sorts of new things (sometimes) and anyone interested in nudity or freeballing or kilts has to be, well, different. I imagine there are lots of other things to learn about, too.

I frequently hike nude, mostly in BC where casual nudity seems accepted, but also in nearby WA and OR states (also CA state). I'm told nude hiking is legal in OR. It's apparently not in WA, but a friend who's a ranger with the national forest - Mt Baker-Snowquamie - said he and his colleagues never pursue complaints.

I also wear just a T-shirt or sweat shirt and socks indoors in the winter. That's usually enough to go to the wood pile as well - with clogs added to the feet.
It's never too cold on the coast of BC to FB in winter. However, I tend to wear a second layer on cold days on the ski slopes.
However, I lived in Winnipeg for 5 years a long time ago. I usually wore longjohns when it got down to -20C and colder. Note that I don't just wear UW when it's cold. It's longjohns, or a full second layer of clothing for warmth.
While I agree that there's a lot o' blood circulating through one's cock, I did freeze mine once while crosscountry skiing in the -20Cs. I luckily had some brandy along for refreshment. So I thawed the member and was OK afterwards. Of course, I did drink the brandy as well.

I love freeballing in cooler weather, My testicles do not hang as low and do not rub against my inner thigh. I lived in oklahoma for about 35 years and it did not matter how cold it got wether I wore underwear or not. But it never got any colder than in the single digits and never below zero.
