Re: Chris Craft 430ies
I have my block and heads back.... The heads have been surfaced, new seats put in, new guides, new springs, new seals.
The block was cleaned and is now final honed for the Wiseco .040 pistons that I have. The clearance for the forged pistons is five thou, so the block is prepared for that size.
We have inspected the crank and rods and determined that we will likely hard chrome plate the crank and have the rotating assembly balanced. In the grand scheme of things, the extra expense is worth it, and not a big dollar one given the total $$$$$$of this engine
When i have some photos to show I will put em up!!

Re: Chris Craft 430ies
Why hard chrome? Turning it down is usually all it needs. What size would it end up? 0.10 under?Chris Craft crazy wrote: ...........We have inspected the crank and rods and determined that we will likely hard chrome plate the crank and have the rotating assembly balanced. ..........

Re: Chris Craft 430ies
Well, a couple of things.... When this engine was previously rebuilt, (only about 50 hours ago) the engine builder did not turn the crank, but simply polished it. Inspection of the crank visually has noted that there are ridges on the rod journals that should been turned out....the bearings did not seat properly as a result. The issue for the 430 is that Clevite no longer make undersized mains, and Federal mogul make only standard and .010 undersize. All the rest of the bearings available are offshore produced, and I would rather not buy chineses if we can avoid it. If the crank will clean up at .010, no worries.... but if it doesn't, the chroming will bring it back up to standard size.
The chroming will provide a harder surface that will wear longer, and absorb more high performance use, and if the money is not too punitive, why not... We are going to get the rotating assembly balanced, which in the grand scheme of the money being spent is minimal.
The previous builder also reconditioned the rods, so they will all have to be carefully checked...since all of the previous work was mostly crap. Anyway, on we go... it will be right in the end.

Re: Chris Craft 430ies
Crank turned at .010 .... good, because now the only remaining American made bearing that is oversized can be used.... Sealed Power still make .010 bearings...
Bad news: $700 for bearings. Ouch.
Next: Balancing the entire rotating assembly.

that's what I thought. arggh. Anyway, they're on their way.
edited to add... came in at 500 bucks including tax. Not as bad a previously thought.

A picture of my edelbrock manifolds with the first polish on them. These now have Glenwood marine elbows on the ends, note the cooling water exhaust ports.
