I found a set of .030" over pistons, stock step profile for my Edsel 410 engine. I already have a set of 430 heads from a 59 Merc. that I was considering using on the 410. I also wanted to use a steel head gasket to keep the compression up.
I have had my 410 cam reground to match a 70 Boss 429 spec. I'm not sure about possible valve to head interference.
Here is the cam card specs from Oregon cam.
219/229 duration @.050"
278/290 advertised duration @.006"
.498" lift with a 1.73:1 rocker ratio
116 lobe seperation
you should degree the cam to an intake lobe center line of 110 degrees.
intake opens 0 close 40
exhaust opens 57 close -7

Piston dome/head clearance must be checked regardless in a situation such as this, especially with a steel shim head gasket. You also need to CC the piston/cyl to confirm/adjust CR.edselman wrote:

MEL used to double this type of gasket until a replacement block was cast .020" higher in 1958.

Dial in the cam, do a mock up, put some clay on thop of the piston and see what results you get when you turn over the crank (slowly.

No,I didn't think I had to do any changes to the valve springs. I'm gaining about .060" valve lift. Is that enough to create coil bind ? I'll have to look at that.

Stock FORD springs are known to take lift up to .050" valve lift no problem as a rule of thumb. But it's just a rule of thumb. Never do assumptions. Always double check w. the right tools.
So a .060" you're targeting is definitely going to ask for your extra attention.
Please remember that it's not just coil bind that matters but valve float too. Springs w. stronger spring pressure are a must. Consider buying a cam kit which includes the springs and the locks etc...Kits usually include the cam, springs, locks and lifters.
Purchase a degree wheel and read about how to install and degree a cam. Buy yourself a dial indicator w. a magnetic stand (Cheapo Chinese will do fine) and you're ready to do it the right way w/o guesswork.
