Lincoln 430 Factory Pistons

Post by The Californian » Tue 23. Jul 2019, 11:57

Anybody have pictures of stock piston tops for this engine?

Was told there are two pistons used.

Wikipedia lists three compression ratios.

When I mentioned that I was told that is so but there are still only two pistons that were used.

Thanks

Bob

Thank you Theo

Bottom line is our pistons better be usable.

Same story for the rest of the engine.

Plan is to disassemble it.Check everything and put it back together and start it up.

Think we have the clearances in a 50's Hot Rod magazine booklet article.

They call it an 'angle block'.Includes an A 1 explanation of how combustion chamber works.

Have to build some storage before we bring it home to tear apart.

Has a cast iron 4 barrel intake but no carb.We plan to put some kind of Holley on it.

Will keep you posted.

If you have a 1963, 1964 or 1965 430 your original heads will have a small combustion chamber. 1958-62 430's and 1966-March 1968 462's have the smaller step pistons and no combustion chamber in the head. The 430's step will be slightly larger. Pictured is a 1965 430 head and piston.

From what the previous owner has said it is probably a '58-62.We would prefer that it is.

Then it will be true 'angle block' Ford V8.Like the Chevy 348 and 409.

It might turn out to be a later one.

It was a pullout that the former owner took home from a body shop where he saw it.

Said it was too good to junk so he got it.Never did anything with it over the years and gave it to us.

So.When we open it up.Check the HEAD.That will be the difference.First time we have heard of heads with

what looks like a little relief around valves.

Thank you Chris.

No problem. I am currently working on adapting a 65 MEL to a FE/FT bellhousing. If you have a 58-60 block you will have the FE bellhousing. (See pictures below) If your block is a 1958 it will NOT have the middle side engine mount bosses. 59-68 have these engine mount bosses. 1961-68 blocks have the relocated starter. As pictured 61-68 4 bellhousing bolts and both dowls are shared with the FE. There is no bolt below the starter.

Thank you Chris

That will make more sense to us when we look at engine.

Was told it is a C6 if that helps but that probably should wait for us to confirm it.

Reassuring you have acres and acres of 430 parts.:)

Now we will take it apart with confidence!

I keep thinking of Pecos when I see that Waco.

West Texas is more like out here in California. Not much in Pecos though unless I was not let in on secret.

If the parts I have will help I'll post. The running (allegedly) 65 430 is going in for mockup. If all is good I will run it while I do what appears to be a rehone and bearing swap on another 65 430. We pulled the heads on the 59 430 and closed it back up when we found water damage. Setting it aside for another day. To be continued....

'If the parts I have will help I'll post'

We were just kidding about that.

The parts on pallets made it look like there are parts on pallets for as far as the eye can see.

We think big out here in California.Talk big Live big.The only way to fly!

Sounds like what we use to do with a '69 Roadrunner.

Switched the stock 383 out with a built 440 a couple times.

Moved on to tube frames now though. No muss no fuss.

Like this except we don't even bother with a body. That is a whole other deal.
