New guy here with a 62 430 rebuild!

Post by spectramal » Tue 16. Apr 2019, 19:34

Hey, the name's Malcolm, and I'm a 49 year old mechanic from Washington state. I've rebuilt lots of engines over the years but I am new to the MEL. Did a pretty cool 390 a short while ago but this is a lot more iron!

This 430 still had 6 original pistons in it and 2 older replacements. I tried honing it out and it looks like the only way forward is to bore. Now the problem of what kind of pistons do I get? The owner would like to build a little more power into this if we can, but I hate to spend thousands and thousands of dollars (just on parts) to get there! Is there a set of oversize pistons available that isn't the crap flatops that isn't custom made?

Hello,
I have seen a set of Egge pistons that came out of a noisy Edsel 410. They had the correct step but no pin offset. Being heavy on one side was causing them to rattle. As far as I know Wiesco is the only one that has the correct $1100 set of custom pistons. I bought a running 65 430 for this reason. The 59 430 still sits waiting the expense for me to do it right. Pretty sure I have an extra 63-65 low profile/large port four barrel intake if your looking for one.

If you find a set of NOS MEL pistons make sure they are specifically for the 58-62 430. The 63-65 430s have a small combustion chamber in the head and the piston step is slightly larger.

Just my luck. Well the build just got a lot steeper then. Yes, we could use a 4 barrel for it. From what I hear it really wakes them up.

This one still had 6 original pistons in it. Looks like no one makes a ring set that fits them tho.
