I have bought a new pair of rocker arm shafts on e-bay from a seller named "old-parts".
They don't look similar to the originals and I wonder if this is going to work?

Can the extra holes in the original shafts been an idea that didn't
work out so well?

Both work fine. Some don't even have the grooves. They work fine too
