DIY012 MEL Starters...UPDATED.....7/20/2020 Rev C Add starter removal procedure

1959 Lincoln 430 V8 starter replacement (58, 59 and 60 Lincoln)
Disconnect the battery.
In order to remove the starter you will need to remove the motor mount nuts and carefully raise the engine.
Caution: when raising the engine make sure it does not hit the vacuum wiper motor
you may need to remove it.
Remove the passenger side motor mount.
Remove the Generator
Block up the engine with wood blocks.
You may need to loosen the exhaust system from the manifolds.
Remove the starter cable'
Remove the three bolts
The starter should come out by moving it forward.
You may need to tilt the engine slightly to clear the frame.

I purchased my stater from Blax Auto Parts in Ridgefield NJ.

This starter is very common and is used on many applications.
Centrifugal Starter I used was part number 3115.
The correct Part number is 3117. However, The book does not list this unit, it has been discontinued.
The new starter will need to be clocked or it will not line up.
This means you will need to change out the end plate with the correct keyway. Thats the only way the new stater will work. Check the condition of the bronze bushing. You my need to press the new bushing into the old starter end plate.
OR.....You can special order Part # 3117 ....this is a build to order unit using your starter for the 430 engine.

Now is a good time to replace the starter cable. You may want to solder the lugs on each end to insure a good connection. I also shielded the cable with a piece of hose wrapped in foil tape over the cable or another suitable material. This will help those hard to start hot engines.

Real nice unit.

The end plate orients or clocks the starter correctly so the the stud clears the exhaust manifold flange.[/b]

DSCN4005.jpg
Notice on the center starter and the end plate on the right, the two inboard through holes are about one inch apart or about 10 degrees from the key-way .....(part # 3115) Thats where the two long bolts hold the starter together.

DSCN4006A.jpg
Here is the actual key-way ... I marked on the starter just where the key-way should be. The starter to the left shows the correct location.....

DSCN4007.jpg
In this illustration the starter part # 3115 "out of the box" IT WILL NOT WORK. The positive cable stud interferes with the exhaust manifold.

Here is the starter installed with the correct end plate. (starter part #3117)
