Cast Iron Ford Case Identification
Cast Iron Ford transmissions can be identified by the letter code on the tag which is located on the side of the transmission case. The codes shown below reference the letter codes from the case.
Cases can also be identified by the case measurement from front to back, not including the bell housing or rear pump section.

FMX = 9 7/8" (1968-1981)
FMX units are very similar to a Small Case, but they are not the same.
FMX units do not have a rear pump, and the filler tube goes into
the case (not the oil pan).
What type of transmission fluid I can use?
Check with the vehicle manufacturer or owner’s manual for the correct fluid type.
Type A Suffix A was the original fluid factory fill. Dextron III/ Mercon is used as its replacement.
TYPE "F" became available in 1967.
Now TYPE "A", it's replacement TYPE "A" SUFFIX "A" and it's replacement DEXRON III / Mercon cannot be used in a TYPE "F" specific transmission as the clutch materials will slip leading to failure. But TYPE "F" can be used in a DEXRON III/ Mercon application and it will give a more firm shift. Due to the lack of friction modifiers in type F.
If you are working on a Ford, Mercury, or Lincoln and the transmission has the original bronze type friction plates, then Type F should be used.
DO NOT introduce any "A"/DEXRON III/MERCON into a TYPE "F" only trans. It does not contain the friction modifiers the friction materials need and will result in slippage.
IN VEHICLE ADJUSTMENTS
CAST IRON FORD
FRONT BAND ADJUSTMENT
1. With the transmission oil pan removed, back off the adjusting screw lock nut and
adjusting screw far enough to insert a ¼” wide metal block in between the servo piston
rod and the adjusting screw.
2. Turn the screw until it contacts the metal block. Then tighten screw a little more too
about 10 inch pounds and back off one turn.
3. While holding the adjustment screw in position, tighten the lock nut down to 20-25 foot
pounds.
REAR BAND ADJUSTMENT
1. Loosen the lock nut and tighten the adjusting screw to 10 foot pounds.
2. Back of the adjusting screw 1 ½ turns and tighten the lock nut to a torque of 35-40 foot
pounds.
Note, 1961-1965 Lincoln transmissions use external band adjustments.
FORDOMATIC FM2
FRONT BAND ADJUSTMENT
1. The low band adjusting screw is located through the front left side of the
case. Loosen the lock nut several turns and then tighten the adjusting bolt
down to 10 inch pounds.
2. Back off the adjusting bolt 2 full turns and then tighten the lock nut to a
torque of 40 foot pounds.
REAR BAND ADJUSTMENT
1. Remove the transmission oil pan and locate the rear servo adjusting rod.
2. Loosen the lock nut and adjusting nut and insert a ¼” wide spacer (wrench
works well) between the adjusting nut and the rod seat (half ball).
3. While holding the adjusting rod stationary (use the flat area on the rod), and
with the ¼” spacer inserted, tighten the adjusting nut to 45-50 inch pounds.
4. Back off the adjusting nut two full turns and tighten the lock nut against it to
15-18 foot pounds. Use caution not to let the adjusting nut rotate while
tightening the lock nut.
FORD FMX BAND ADJUSTMENT
The front band is adjusted internally.
1. Loosen lock nut on the adjuster.
2. Insert a 1/4" spacer between the servo and adjuster screw.
3. Torque the adjuster screw to 10" (inch) lbs. Remove the spacer.
4. The adjuster is then tightened an additional 1 full turn.
5. Tighten lock nut.
The rear band is adjusted externally.
1. Loosen the lock nut.
2. Torque adjuster screw to 10'(foot) lbs. Back adjuster off 1 1/2 turns.
3. Tighten lock nut.
FORD C4 BAND ADJUSTMENT
INTERMEDIATE BAND ADJUSTMENT.
1. Loosen the lock nut.
2.Tighten the band adjustment screw to 10 ft-lbs. Then back off 1 3/4 turns.
3.Tighten the locknut to 40 ft-lbs. Use caution not to let the adjusting nut rotate while tightening the lock nut.
REVERSE BAND ADJUSTMENT.
1.Loosen the lock nut.
2.Tighten the band adjustment screw to 10 ft-lbs. Then back off 3 full turns.
3.Tighten the locknut to 40 ft-lbs. Use caution not to let the adjusting nut rotate while tightening the lock nut.
FORD C6 BAND ADJUSTMENT
1. Loosenthe lock nut.
2. Tighten the adjusting screw to 14 N-m (10 lb-ft).
3.Back off the adjusting screw exactly 1-1/2 turns.
4.Hold the adjusting screw from turning and tighten the lock nut to 35-45 lb-ft. Use caution not to let the adjusting nut rotate while tightening the lock nut.
Ford recommends replacing the lock nut.
