Re: Hilborn on my MEL 430
As far as I know Slovers is still selling those valve covers, although I bought MOON products valve covers which a bunch of us got when MOON agreed to make a limited run of them. I believe MOON is committed to producing these valve covers whenever they get a group of ten together. Good to see you ba...

Re: MEL Engine Series Combustion Chamber & Piston Design
I have been doing some research on Chevrolet 409 engines lately, and came across the following quote from wiki, which I post here. As some of you may know, the 409 also had a triangular combustion chamber, and it was in the cylinder, like the MEL series of engines. In 1963, you could order a Impala ...

Re: affordable 430 pistons
Theo, my sets of original pistons have the Ford oval logo on them, and Ford also marketed oversize pistons as original FoMoCo parts... there are a left side set on Ebay right now... Sadly only half a set, .030's Funny that one of the old piston makers don't still have their patterns for this piston....

Re: affordable 430 pistons
It's not about manufacturer, it is about the shape of the piston. The original Ford design is available to view here in several incarnations, and the subsequent engineering rationale is also here. The only advantage that Wiseco has is that they will custom forge and machine the size and shape of the...

Re: Hilborn on my MEL 430
Building a period correct vintage drag car is a rather expensive hobby. Truer words were never spoken ;) In fact just building a period correct rod of any kind is fairly expensive... then add the MEL wrinkle, and here we are. BUT two things are constant. First, your gearhead friends have no idea wh...

Re: affordable 430 pistons
The point here is if the pistons that Badger make do not look like the Wiseco picture that was suddenly a point of controversy is that they are not correct. The MEL stepped piston has a step in a specific area. Compression only has a small part to do with it. The compression could be equal to the or...

Re: roller rockers for the 430
Yes, and the spacers are different, so I had to make a couple on the lathe, and shorten a couple.
I didn't need shafts, since I had three sets to choose from, all with less than 750 total hours on each set. Marine engines don't get a lot of hours typically.

Re: Chris Craft 430ies
I'm going to get some better pics...but I am very pleased with the result. Funny, when this whole project started, I was going to repaint the engine, freshen the ignition and restore the boat and use it. Now here I am two years later, and apparently I am going for vintage hot rod show motor and boat...

Re: Chris Craft 430ies
Joe is an interesting guy... very modest about what he does, and very fussy. He sent me photos before he sent the assembly back, and told me he assembled them, and didn't like the color, so he took them all apart and had them recolored... :o Here is a web page with Joe's contact info. He is not on t...
