Firstly, the number of fatalities has reached an all time low and overall casualties have continued their downward trend with a 6% reduction from last year. There has also been an encouraging reduction in the number of people killed or seriously injured on the roads and this is especially the case for children. This is excellent news as it reflects our commitment to achieve, or even better the national targets for casualty reduction by 2010.

Road deaths have fallen to the lowest level since records began back in 1928.

Last year 2,946 people were killed in Britain - a seven per cent reduction on 2006 when 3,172 died, new Department of Transport figures show.

And it is the first time that fatalities have dropped below 3,000, announced road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick.

He added: "The number of people killed or seriously injured has been cut by more than a third since the mid - 1990s - down almost 17,000."

But charity Brake said: "While this is good news, there can be no room for complacency by the government."

Road deaths have fallen to the lowest figure since records began more than 80 years ago.

New figures from the Department for Transport (DfT) reveal that the number of people killed on Britain’s roads fell by 7% last year, from 3,172 in 2006 to 2,943 in 2007.

Despite indications that the level of traffic rose last year, the number deaths among vulnerable road users, including children, cyclists and pedestrians, fell across the board.

In 2007 car driver and passenger fatalities dropped by 11% on the previous year and the number of seriously injured and other casualties also dropped markedly, by 9% and 6% respectively.

However, the DfT did not provide a purpose of journey breakdown, which would help identify how many people died while driving for work.

The rate of road deaths has been dropping year-on-year, however the 2007 figures, with 229 fewer deaths than 2006, shows the greatest improvement in recent years.

Sheila Rainger deputy director of the RAC Foundation said: “To measure falls in road deaths in hundreds rather than tens is wonderful news and a great achievement.”

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) also welcomed the news.

Head of road safety Kevin Clinton said: “The progress that has been made is a tribute to road safety professionals and shows the value of having long-term, government-led road safety strategies.”

Both organisations warned against complacency and advocated ongoing driver training better and communication among road users.

Dr Will Murray research director at Interactive Driving Systems said: “Road fatalities going down to under 3,000 is a major milestone – you can’t argue that it’s a major improvement but at the same time there are still thousands dying on the roads.

“From a fleet point of view there is still room for improvement,” he said.

Errrrrrrrrrrmmmmmmmmm

But they don't include either fatality caused by high speed trains passing platforms. Just proves how dangerous trains are. There are 12.8 miles of railway track passing platforms thats one fatality per 6.4 miles of platformed railway track PER YEAR. Compare this to 0.09 fatalities per mile of motorway and 0.0065 fatalities/mile for A Class Roads. There have been 0.0000000000001 fatalities per mile on people's drives.

All proved with statistics

They could well be true.

But it wasn't me posting those last statistics.

But in reply to the first post:

Fatalities used to fall by that, or more, every year before the sCams.

But for years now, with the spread of sCams, the fatality figures have practically flatlined.

We're getting safer and safer cars.

Cars of just a few years old are practically being given away so people who used to drive old banger death traps are now driving cars with just a few years old safety technology.

We had a very mild winter which cuts the fatality figures.

And the economy hasn't been doing so well, which usually reduces road activity, which reduces the fatality figures.
