First, many thanks to those members who have help so far, either here or by phone with my questions. Now for the next question. I have been restoring a 66 Cyclone GT for a couple of years.I have done some hunting and I believe a Marti report is unavailable for this car as it is pre 67. I have been told that Ford will give me a "999" history report but all I have from Ford is my VIN decoded. I know everyone thinks their car is rare but this one has A/C, power steering, power windows, power seat,AM-FM radio, Power aerial, lighting package, vinyl roof, intermittent wipers, styled wheels etc. I think that it is a rare special order package but does anyone have an idea how to find a build sheet or more info on the number of Cyclones like this? As always thanks for any help. Loren
I take it you were unable to find a broadcast (build) sheet hidden anywhere in the vehicle?
From the options you mention, they all sound like RPO or Regular Production Options. It may just be a car that was ordered loaded with a lot of options.
What is the DSO number on the data plate? Is it a two or six digit number. Typically a special order vehicle would have a six digit number. Is the DSO an 84 or 89, which would make it a company vehicle internally ordered by Ford.
I would also check with the Fairlane Club of America as the later intermediate Comets are also part of their group.
You may also want to track the car back to the orignal owner or family member, as he/she may be able to explain the circumstances behind the vehicle options.
I've got a rare 66 Comet too and trying to find out but to no avail. Mines a Caliente bucket seat convert, 200 six, auto, black on black. May be one of a kind (not that stops me from butchering it) but nice to know.
All Cyclones are relatively rare in those years compared to other brands. I'm sure that combination of options is quite rare and it sounds to me like it would have been very expensive new. You might have something built for the touring new car shows or ordered for some VIP.
A guy locally had a 67 Falcon Sports Coupe with every option, console, shoulder belts, vinyl roof, posi, optional axle ratio, power disc brakes, 4 speed, 289-4V, and on it's three part rad support trim tag it had "SPEC SHO PREP" (or SHOW). The engine compartment was a much glossier black and all the paint was polished in the jambs. It had a VIN with lots of zeros. Story was the car toured Canada with the new car show and got dumped at a dealer at the end of the run. It was a Falcon that stickered at TBird money with options that made it more expensive than most Fairlane GT's. The guy bought it new in 69 at a deep discount.

Thanks guys. Dennis the DSO is 52 (LA). Tom, my car is triple black and the strange thing is that it has a fully functional twin scoop hood which I thought may mean some special order, unless it's been added, but the rest of the car is completely original. The story I got was it was smashed up in the front end in 1968 and it sat in the body shop until 2002 when a fellow got it out, sold it to a man who sold it to me. Shows 14.000 miles. I can't trace it further than that so I guess I'll never know the story. Thanks
being a 14,000 mile car and sitting around since 68 it shouldn't have been screwed with too much, I don't know how far you've taken it apart or looked for it, but I've found convertible build sheets inside the rear window mechanism more so than hardtops, but it's worth a look, of course there are the usual places like under the dash in the wiring harness, on top of the glove box liner, underside of dash pad, under the rugs, underside or behind the seat in the springs, behind the pop off rear cover on bucket seats, behind the front kick plates. The AM/FM radio sounds like a rare option..

Y'know 1968-2002 is fairly quick for some body shops that don't have courtesy cars, maybe the owner just got tired of waiting for it?
I think black is not real common on any 66 Comet, power seat and windows are fairly rare too. I wish there was some way to have all those production figures.
Thanks Tony. I've taken it down quite a way but I haven't looked in the back cover of the bucket seats, or under the dash pad. I may find it there, but she's pretty bare now so my hope is fading fast LOL. Thanks for those ideas. Tom, I just hope the owner didn't get a VW courtesy car and enjoyed it more than the Cyclone!!! Loren
Hi Dennis. The document Ford sent me states DSO 52-Los Angeles, so that's what I'm going on. The hood is fiberglass and looks the same as the normal twin scoop, but has the scoops extended to the front of the hood about eight inches further than most. Much the same as a 65 Cyclone hood would be configured. It is fully functional as the air passes through into a round area that is cut out for the air cleaner. Loren
If it wouldnt be too much trouble, could you take a few pictures of the hood on your '66? I've got a '67 cyclone gt convertible, and I'd like to see how these hood mods were done.
for themselves or wife. I ordered myself many loaded to the gunwales demos over the years, a number of them black on black. Alot of those loaded factory cars are sold to the dealers way below invoice to move em.
Ron.
Sounds like a very neat car. THe 66 Cyclone is my favorite muscle car body.
What is the color combo?
In 1966 the Cyclone convert was a indy pace car. I have a lot of info on these cars and will see what I can dig up.
to other person on DSO
Mercury had different DSO's than Ford did and 52 is LA as was Phoenix back then.
Yes, pics please!
Mercury did offer a functional over the counter Ram Air Hood.
The standard scooped hood was not functional. Optional on 66 CYclone but std on Cyclone GT.
Is it a auto or 4spd? 4spd air cars were extremely rare.
Some 66 Cyclone 2dr hd top drag intended cars had a weight in back end like a convert. Does your car have them? For sure an over the counter option or dealer add on with a Ford Part number.
Because the 66-67 comet cyclones were 7" longer (behind wheels) they had better weight transfer than the Fairlane cousin's especially if equipped with the added weight canisters as they hung on frame just in front of rear bumper.
