AFX Cammer Stang

December 23 2008, 11:45 AM

That car was owned by a local collector up here in BC Canada for several years. He also owned 2 Thunderbolts, including Mickey Thompsons 427 Hemi headed burgandy car,as well as a 67 R code 427 Mercury Comet. He also had a couple of cool MoPars, including a 64 Max Wedge 4 speed Fury, a 70 Hemi Cuda Super Stocker, and a Hemi Dart.
Although the ad mentions the Cammers Hillborn fuel injection, it doesn`t mention that it has been converted to EFI. When Gerry owned this Mustang, I gotta give him credit, he ran the snot out of it at the dragstrip a few times.

428 powered Fairmont drag car, Best ET:10.03@132.11MPH, best 60 ft: 1.29
59 Meteor 2 dr. sedan 332, Ford O Matic
74 F350 ramp truck 390 4speed

AFX'er at the drags

When the previous owner wanted to run the car at first it was all original, RC bell and the narrow 4 point rollbar. The tech guys wouldn't allow it to go quicker than 14.0 . At Ashcroft on 60's vintage Goodyear Blue Streaks it still pulled the wheels on launch. Later when Jerry (J or G?) got the car he ran it a few times and had to add to the rollbar and use a Lakewood bell. He also changed from the dual quads to the cool Hilborns but retained all the original parts. It was certainly very cool to see such historic stuff running at local races!
Not sure if all the spares come with the car and if it still has the Lakewood and full cage.

The Larsen Ford car was not one of the first group of ten cars built by H-M. It was built at a later date. It was my understanding the DST car and the first ten HM cars were built on a 105" WB. All remaining A/FX Mustangs after 12-22-64 were to be built on a 106" WB in order to be acceptable to NHRA.

Years ago, I was at Quaker City racing my T-Bolt and Bob Hamilton was there with the Red Alert Chevelle. I asked him about his A/FX Mustang and he told me it came off of Larsen Ford's lot as a 289 K code. Him and his wife drove it on vacation down South and eventually left it at H-M where they converted it to a 427 HR powered car. They flew home and he picked the drag car up later.

Incidently, I heard rumor that Larsen had five cars converted. Many years ago I did come across another A/FX Mustang that a fellow I worked with at Ford was converting into a Super Gas car. The VIN was a few numbers away from the Larsen Ford - Bob Hamilton car. I have no idea if any of the other three ever surfaced.

At one time the Larsen Ford car was in the Detroit area and showed up for sale at one of the early Super Ford shows, 1981 or 82?, when it was held at the Hyatt Regency in Dearborn. A fellow in OK bought it. I don't recall his name, but it wasn't Brent Hajek.

I don't think the DST car was "dissected", as Brannan had that car until he received the tenth H-M car built. However it is documented that Ford did order from DST and other suppliers, each of the fabricated components and had them air freighted to H-M. I assume to use as reference components to construct the ten H-M cars.

Regardless, the Larsen Ford car is an original H-M built A/FX'er.

Regards,
Dennis

Dennis, maybe it was Rick Kirk. When I towed my LWG into the Hyatt he asked me if it was..

.......'the one from Nebraska'. I said yes, he had made an offer of parts (Ford) and cash and I matched it in cash and Ace accepted my offer as he had turned to running a Malibu wagon, Rod. BTW, Ace is running a 65 Chevelle 10.60-80ish on E-85.

No, I wouldn't ever forget his name. Anyway, I just remembered ...

It was Connie Moore. The car sold cheap, $2,500 or so as a roller.

Dennis
