I prefer ...

a bushed rocker. They have always held up well for me and you don"t have to worry about having small steel parts moving through your engine if something goes south. Mike

Most Aluminum rockers are not bushed ~

December 21 2008, 9:17 AM

My fear would be running a good size roller cam on bushed rockers. Just because of spring pressures is all. I think they would be a little weak. Other then that, I wouldn't be concerned with it. JMHO

My Tp's Harland Sharp rockers are bushed. Worked well on .780" roller Lunati.....

December 21 2008, 10:14 AM

.......with 680# open pressure. Barry's point on bushing thickness is a valid one for comparison's sake, JMO, Rod.

OK Rod~

December 21 2008, 10:20 AM

Point taken. Not trying to sound like a smart azz here. I'm just a little leery is all. But if they hold up, then that's a good thing! Thanks for the insight on your experience. Take care

You'll get a better deal

December 21 2008, 9:05 AM

from either Barry R. or Brent Lykins on this forum. I believe one or both carry those, but I have not yet seen an evaluation of all the pieces.

Talked to them at PRI

December 21 2008, 9:59 AM

They are imported parts - but the folks selling them senm genuinly interested in improving them based on customer feedback. The first set I recieved had a very coarse shaft finish. I reported it back and they sent me a replacement shaft set with a better surface three weeks later. We discussed using a thinner cross section bushing, allowing a stronger arm - and they indicated that it was a good idea and that they would try and implement it. Can't ask much more than that - a responsive supplier will be a good one. I have not yet installed the set on an engine - luck has it there are no Ed headed pieces ready yet in the shop....

Need more than the heads

December 21 2008, 2:21 PM

I have plenty of iron, and a couple Eds on the floor. But I need a mild cam short block to hang them from if I am gonna check the geometry...

You have 48 hours to build this test motor. Or, I will put a hex upon you. I restocked my eye of newt today, so this is not an idle threat.

They use 6061-T6 aluminum not very strong

December 21 2008, 10:41 AM

Most rockers are made from 7075 or 2024 both of which are much stronger than 6061.
Tensile strength is very important in a rocker so the shaft hole does not tear open.
2024-T4 is 50,000 PSI
7075-T651 is 66,000 PSI
6061-T6 is 40,000 PSI

Can't find a 2024-T6 spec but it would be close to 7075 at that hardness
My rocker arms are 7075-T751

Machined my own

December 21 2008, 12:23 PM

I am an unabashed copier of good ideas I see
My rocker arms are copies of Dove's, rocker stands are the Erson design fitted to the Dove rockers.
But even using mild roller cam springs everything still flexes and galls. I am workjing on my own design for shaft rockers along the T&D or Jesel design. One shaft for each cyl, stands will use the head studs like T&D does. 4 3/8 studs is not "A better idea". LOL

Mario be careful with that Temper!

December 21 2008, 9:08 PM

Of the aluminum that is happy.gif . The T75 and T751 temper for 7075 are susceptible to stress-corrosion cracking, meaning, it will crack given a galvanic couple. So keep an eye on them, and if you make any more, go to the T73 the over-aged temper. It doesn't have the nasty behavior of the T75 family.

Next set will be 7068

December 22 2008, 2:43 AM

Fairly new very high strength alloy, tensile approaches mild steel.
Though Jesel has some really cool looking rockers now made from steel but thats a lot of machine time. LOL

Hey Mario, aren't your stands made of 7000 series Al also? You should get into the FE rocker business too. I like your design a lot more than the popular roller bearing system that looks similar to yours. happy.gif

My stands are 6061-T6

December 21 2008, 12:17 PM

Lots strong for the application.
Since the stiffness is the same for most aluminums making the stands out of expensive material does not make sense.
If the stand got to the point where they started to bend and stay bent then stronger aluminum would help.
