other than Michigan is never revealed. Clint is a retired Ford assembly line worker. His Son in the movie is driving a Jap vehicle and his reaction...........well he is Clint Eastwood! I won't say any more about it.

If Arnie evber did make another movie, his "Greenie" ways would probably require all the good and bad guys to drive hybrid or electric cars! Considering his well published love affair with Hummers, it seems a tad hypocritical, don`tcha think?

This is going to be a block buster hit. Eastwood's greatest role and swan song, as to John Wayne's The Shootist. Unfortunately, Hollywood will refuse to recognize such achievement with an academy award. The liberals and fags there will never accept American core values. Be sure to support this rare film by taking your family.
First of all, I too just saw the trailer, and I think it will be an awesome film. That being said, I read one of the critics who was of the opinion that the movie, or at least the script stunk. He was also of the opinion that the film, or at least Clint Eastwood would win an Oscar based on Clint's success and time in the industry. Oh well opinions are like you know, everyone has one.
I personally don't listen to critics. Quite often their opinion is opposite mine.
I saw the trailer, and I'm looking forward to buying, or renting the DVD.
On a note more personal to those of us here, it's too bad the scriptwriters chose a 72 Gran Torino, and named the move after that. It would have, in my opinion at least, been nice if they had used something like a 69 R code Torino, or better yet something even older like a 63, 64 R code, or even a 63, 63 G code. At least use a car powered by an FE. At least use a car that left the factory with some balls. Granted I don't know that much about the 72 model year, but my understanding is that 72 was the first year, of more smog equipment, and less horsepower.
Like I said regardless of all that I'm still looking forward to seeing it.
Well i have a 72 Gran Torino 351CJ 4speed. Granted its not a FE. It is a great car with the compitition suspension and Cobra Jet motor. The motor is rated at 266hp at 5,400 rpm and 310-lbs.ft. of torque at 3,600 rpm
Not realy sure if this is net or flywheel ratings. In 72 didnt it change from flywheel to rear wheel horsepower? My cars only upgrade is a 650 holley dp carb. Motor has never been rebuilt or taken out of the car. She runs hard and will suprise you. I love my 68 fe torino, but this car is a close second and im happy it will get a little recognition by being in a movie.
...one of Ford's all time best designs, full (big car) frame, available 302 to 460(!) V8, with big sway bars, 9" (4 link) rear end, tight suspension & handling (1972-1976?). Integral power steering, "refocused toward luxury and demphasized performance", available with the 4-speed transmission.
What did the grille of a base 1972 Torino look like?

I liked the looks of the 1972 Gran Torino when it came out, and still sorta do. I know I was at the age where I bicycled out to car dealers, and soon wore out the 1972 Torino sales brochure I picked up. It is an interesting one year style, and is interesting in this movie in that it avoids both the muscle car typecast and also the Starsky and Hutch history.
The base 1972 Torino had a unique grille that I was not so fond of, but I forget what it was and my books are in storage right now. Anyone have a pic of a base Torino for 1972?

Shoe, I don`t have a photo handy, but my Dad used to own a base 72 Torino 2dr HT (302 auto, yawn.) It had a full width silver plastic grille that incorperated the holes for the headlights in it, compared to the more stylish Gand Torino`s squarish center grille with seperate headlight bezels. Personally, I always thought that the 72 Gand Torino Sport was a very nice looking car, with it`s built in hood scoop and fastback roofline. 1972 was also the only year that the full framed Torino had nice small bumpers, for 73 the huge, ugly "Battering Ram" bumpers were mandated, to be able to take a low speed hit(5mph front, 2 1/2 mph rear) parking lot type incident with no body damage. (A far cry from todays very expensive painted plastic bumpers that split or fall off in a minor hit, and look oh so nice with scrape rashes on the corners!)
A friend used to have a 73 Grand Torino Sport, and between the big bumpers and no hood scoop on the 73`s, it was nowhere near as atractive as the 72. I don`t know what the 73 weighed, but even with it`s 351C 4V "C.J." engine, and a 4 speed, it was quite a slug. It did have a very nice interior, black with bucket seats and console, tach and full gauge package.
As for the movie, I can`t wait for it to come to theatres near here.

The Gonkulator says about 281-303hp gross for 351cj 71-72
December 21 2008, 6:04 PM
The "G" calculates 303hp gross for the 71cj with 9.0cr and the 390gt/428cj cam events, and 281hp for the 72cj with 8.0cr and 4 degrees retard. Things were changing so fast back then as stuff got phased out I am not totally sure what they did when. I think the "net" hp ratings were pretty honest so that 266 net hp is a lot. Have you ever had your 72 on a scale to weigh it? Or to the strip? I have no data on how these cars ran.
I thought "Gran Torino" was an island in Italy or something until I saw the real car in the movie ads. Looking forward to it!
That is the beauty of it. When I heard the tittle... What!!! GRAAAn TorRIIINo!!!! What's up with that!!! and THAT is what got my attention. One of the most unheralded cars Ford had. But not a bad car by any means. You will catch a lot of flack for that comment, and deservedly so. If it would have been tittled Mustang or Cobra everyone would have shrugged their shoulders and thought, yeah another "B" car movie, I thought Clint grew up. And the only people to go watch it would be Mustang and die hard Eastwood fans. I am sure the hohum status of the car must tie in to the plot some way. I am looking forward to seeing it.
I go to the movies for entertainment, not Life lessons.
I do like most of Clint Eastwoods movies, but I'm not about to get tangled up in court, with cops, lawyers ... a bunch of whining Holier-than-thou intellectuals, trying to do what he does in Cinema Life.
Oh, how I wish it was that easy sometimes. A little up front and personal time, teaching remedial manners would be nice. But the fact is, I'm not ready to go back to guns on the hip just to go out for a night with the Ol lady at Sizzlers.
I am not a movie person, but based on the input here, I plan to see it. The question is, I teach a high school automotive class and sometimes get car related movies to show them. Do you think this may/may not be appropriate? I will judge of course after I see it, but would like to have your input. Thanks, RonW
There were many vehicles that were worse fireballs than the Pinto.

How about the Chebby pickups with the side tanks. Fire bomb maybe? How about worse than that? School busses with side tanks. Remember the Church bus in Kentucky a few years back? What a horrible way to go.
(action hero Clint is 78 years old!) a reviewers quote...
December 20 2008, 6:14 PM
..."Even at 78, Eastwood can make 'Get off my lawn' sound as menacing as 'Make my day,' and when he says 'I blow a hole in your face and sleep like a baby,' he sounds as if he means it."
I saw the movie the other night and I hate to dissapoint you guys but it's not a typical Clint E movie (Magnum Force etc) and it's got nothing really to do with a 72 Gran Torino except the he has one in the garage. But it was a good movie anyway.
