Hi all. I need some quick answers about a what is advertised to be a gear vendor overdrive unit thats on craigs list about 2 miles from my home. The OD unit has Amercian overdrive Inc. stamped on it with a part # 8-365-8. Will this convert to my c6? If I go to look at it anything that I should look for? Also its $150.00. From what ive read thats a steal! Matt

the GearVendors OD unit is a 2 piece thing, the OD unit & the trans tail shaft unit for a particular trans. If it is not already off a C6, you will need the necc. adapter from Gearvendors. Cost is approx. $700 exxchange ( you must have the old tailshaft from the unit) It is of no value to you if not available. Even so, I would call GearVendors w/ the Number....they are in San Diego area. I have 1 in the Whistler & they are terrific..
If it is a gear vendors unit it'll have one of their tags riveted on it. Also, as previously mentioned, it can be costly to swap adapter plates. There are also electronics that control the unit (tells it when to shift). They are pricey as well however, keep an eye on ebay. Adapters and electronics are on there quite a bit. There was a guy selling new adapters on ebay a while back but I don't know if he is still around.
Anyway, if it's in good shape, $150 is a sweet deal if it includes the electronics and adapter. It it's just the overdrive unit, it's still a fair price assuming it's in good shape.
This OD unit comes with a ford tailshaft and adapters, selanoid, control module so should i grab it if nothing else but to resale?

I think this is the one that Ford used behind the 460 on F250 and F350

trucks. It is not as robust as a GV, it is NOT a GV. and will fail if you shift it under power like can be done with a GV... also the solinoid gets sticky or fails from time to time. But for 150$ Id grab it if you have a use for it. They live under normal 460 (250 HP) duty...

on my C-6. Note that the castings all have a GV logo cast in. Also there two different ways to attach a GV unit to a C-6. The shortest version requires the complete tear-down of the trans. You must use a special GV short output shaft. In that case, the adapter is only a few inches long. The other way installs the GV unit to the end of the regular extension housing. This makes for a complete trans/GV that's over a foot longer than a regular C-6. And it's considerably less able to handle high torque. The short version can be able to handle over 1200 Ft. lbs.
