Trunk Mounted Battery Cables

Ordered a 1970 428scj MACH1 from Gene Graham Ford, Schenectady, NY in 1970, and a condition of the order was for the installation of a trunk mounted Group 29 battery with Ford cables for rear mounted battery as per BOSS 429. The battery to relay cable insulation is cracked in several spots and is shorting out when performing a resistance test and the positive battery lug is shot. Since I'm doing a semi-restoration of the vehicle, I'd like to replace all the cables and need some advice from the Forum for those of you who either have an original trunk mounted battery or a BOSS 429.

Removed the battery to relay cable and it measures just short of 173", measuring from the battery lug center to centerline of relay terminal hole. The battery to ground cable is a tad over 16", using same method of measurement as above. Firewall to engine ground strap also measures a little over 15'. Relay to starter cable was replaced with larger gauge wire to reduce hot start annoyance. What markings are present are not legible or incomplete (in a vain attempt to cleanup cables for identification purposes) when using 5X magnification. Battery to ground strap appears to be 1 gauge and battery to relay appears to be 0 gauge. Before I proceed to have the cables reproduced, it would be helpful if forum members could assist in verifying the gauge of the +/- cables and marking (doubt this is possible due to age of insulation), if possible.

I've emailed the Boss Performance web site the same request, but have not received a response. So with a little luck, and not lots of luck, maybe I'll get lucky on the Forum, thanks for your assistance-Oliver

Battery Cable

December 17 2008, 3:39 PM

The best battery cable I have ever used is a product called Radaflex. Google Cableyard for information and really good prices. It is not authentic for your application but it is a very high quality product. Jim M

I have used nothing but....

00 welding cable for many years. Look around at welding supply shops---you may find short lengths in

the bargain bin. I say short because welding cable for use in actual welding tends to have more

length than one needs to go from the back to the front of a car, and I've twice found about twenty

foot lengths 'on the cheap'. One even had the lugs already attached. Just applied shrink tube and put

it in.

And there's a gizmo, easily found in rod magazines, that uses a reworked solenoid as a cut-out

so that the cable's only 'hot' when the car's being used. Energized by a toggle switch. I run it off

of the key switch and actuate the ignition with the toggle. Good theft deterrent.

Relocate solenoid?

You might consider relocating the solenoid into the trunk soas not to have an large diameter cable without short circuit protection energized 100% of the time.
