Bellhousing help please?.....

Hi Guy's,
I have a 428 engine with the original ford 'spacer plate' at the rear of the engine. The engine has an original cast iron flywheel.
We have a 'Toploader' gearbox to match up to this engine. It is the big input and output shaft gearbox as used on big block cars.
We have a 'Ford' bellhousing with the following casting number:

C5TA - 7505 - B. ( could be C6TA ).

I have had a quick 'mock' up of this combination and it appears the input shaft is too short and does not engage the pilot bearing.
Could this be because this bellhousing is incorrect for this combination? It appears to be too deep.
Can anyone tell me what bellhousing we will require please? The owner would like to stay with a genuine 'Ford' item.
It is for a GT500 restoration.
Thanks in advance,
Nigel.

You have a truck bell housing. They work fine for smallblock toploaders. You have a big block toploader. You will need a C6AE-D bell or equivilent. I have one with a Apr 68 date code.

I suspected that maybe the case? Let me pass this information on to the owner.
He will need a bellhousing so I will post a 'WTB' in the classified's shortly unless he has any other idea's. Is the one you mention for sale?
Kind Regards,
Nigel.

Have had a 'Ford' cast iron bellhousing installed from new or did they use a Lakewood or similar in these cars?
Better get the facts straight before I talk to the owner.
Thanks,
Nigel.

A Shelby would use a regular Mustang/Fairlane bellhousing

It is cast iron, marked C6OA and has a big Z on it. They are common but expensive. You also need to make sure you get the right clutch fork. 67 and older bellhousings use one style and 68 and newer use another but they both have the same numbers. Hawkrod

Yep mine has the big Z also. I have everything, bell, plate, clutch fork, and dust cover but my fork is for a small input transmission. You will have to find the proper fork for the big input unit. You may be able to use the fork you have. PM me your email address and I will send some pictures to you.
