used on his EMC engine?
Featured in Feb 09 PHR I was reading the mind jaring details of 515 lb-ft @2500 and 654Hp@6200 from essentially a 4"B x 4"S, 10.3CR, 403CuIn w/5.965 Rods. I can't help wonder if/how the long stroke short rod combo could or would apply to an FE Street Engine which ironically mimics that of a production Merc FE 410 B&S. Granted the CHI/400M combo is very specific to tuning as Kasse mentioned, but is there anything that can be learned for FEs from this build esp with respect to the "street engines" the challenge was supposed to simulate?

I think most of that low-end torque is from a combo of....

....a long stroke, the 3V CHI heads, and a camshaft to match the heads. The 3V heads will flow with the 4V Cleveland heads, but they have the port velocity of the smaller port 2V heads.

This kind of torque is quite common with the longer stroke CHI headed combos...I've seen several dyno sheets from 393-408C's and 393-408 Clevors with the CHI heads. If the camshaft specs are right, they all have that much torque available at that low of rpm.

Considering there's not much aftermarket in terms of cranks and rods for the 400, I would venture to say without looking at the specs that all of the components used were factory parts.
