Do I need a regulator with my Carter mech fuel pump or have you-all had good luck running them without one?

I ran the Carter Pump to a Mighty Demon 750 almost 9 years till the engine blew up with no regulator, never had a problem.

How's the build comming? I'm still collecting pieces, should start assembly soon. ww

I found that I had to replace the needle/seat assemblies about once a year...

because the 7-8 lbs pressure would eventually blow past them and and make it pour out black smoke. So a number of years back I put a regulator on and set it at 5.5 lbs and I haven't had to replace any more seats. With high pressure you have to adjust the floats lower to get the right fuel level at the window and the extra fuel pressure from the floats sitting lower in the fuel forces the viton coated needle harder on to the seat in order to seal and wears it out. I found that as soon as I reduced the pressure the fuel level dropped well below the window, and I adjusted the floats higher accordingly.

Of course this is assuming you are talking about the hi perf 7-8 psi Carter pump. The standard one is 5 psi and it will be fine.

Ran without a regulator on a 172 GPH pump at 8 PSI for awhile but ended up putting a regulator on it to reduce the pressure a bit.
