This is a follow up question to my last question regarding the installation of fog lights on my cars.
Today, I'm looking on ebay, and elsewhere on line for prices, and availability. Suddenly I remember that both cars in question, a 2007 Corolla, as well as my 2005 Grand Marquis are still under warranty. So before I go installing aftermarket stuff I figure that I'd better call the dealer(s), and find out if A, they offer any kind of factory add on, and B, if they don't what effect will installing fog lights have on my warranty.
I see that Toyota offers an add on, and will cover the repairs if anything happens as a result of incorrect installation provided that the lights are installed by the dealer.
OK, now I call the Ford/LM dealer that sold me the Marquis. I am told the following.
Ford does not make an add on fog light kit for this car, nor, does the dealer sell an aftermarket kit that would be covered by warranty should something go wrong. I am told, by the service adviser on duty, that even though I would be installing these lights for safety purposes, Ford, MIGHT still void the warranty. The guy tells me that I should have bought a car with factory installed fog lights.
Any Ford service managers, and/or service advisors out there who might shed some light on this?
I need to do something, but it seems like I'm damned if I do, and damned if I don't. Oh, sure, not driving in bad weather is the best solution, but not always possible, or practical.
Cliff I have been driving in this stuff all my driving life don't worry about it. I only have had fog lites for a few years and really don't need them. Its not that big an issue. Mike
They cannot void your warranty by installing aftermarket fog lamps. Now if you install them incorrectly and burn up a wiring harness then yes they can void certain things but lets say a shock goes bad they cannot void that part of the warranty. To void any part of the warranty they have to prove what you did caused the issue, something that they dont want you to know and will not tell you.

is exactly the way it works. For the fog light job, I'd run direct from the battery, or perhaps run a relay circuit from the battery to the fog lights. Use proper fuses. Even a jerk trying to blame you for something will find it practically impossible to blame you for anything that's properly warranteed going wrong.

Cliff If you car is FULLY LOADED, the wiring for the fog lights should be taped up in the front end of the car. They do this on top of the line GM products. The connections need to be weatherproof. The connection for the switch would be still behind the dash. The big 3 are starting to go after any person who has modified, added, changed, or removed any part on your car that was or was not there when the car came off the assembly line. I have seen numberous cars and trucks damaged from people installing after market parts and kits on the cars and trucks. I will give you 2 quick add ons. High powered headlight after market bulbs with over 55watt light limit. They draw too much ampage and melt the sockets, headlamp lens get smoked, and even a couple of fires. The big thing is anyone running a BULLYDOG or anone elses after market tuner on a diesel. The big 3 have sent out bulletins on TOTAL and COMPLETE VOID of the drivetrain warranties. For GM you now have to give and down load all the software to GM BEFORE any motor or trans work is none under warranty coverage. Any soft ware downloads can't be erased once programed into the ECU. They store 10 downloads and are burned into the chips. Anyone with an after market kit in the car or truck on new products had better buy a seperate ECU to protect their warranty of there drive train
Cliff find a mechanic at the Ford store and get the wiring diagram for fog lights. You will need a relay, fuse, switch and the 2 light assemblies for your car. If the wiring is under the car and taped up, install the lights, if not get a go after market kit. Adding this will not effect your emmissions in any way. This should be covered for 7/70 years.
